setting a different internal and external resolution in desktop KDE

hey everyone, I have a pc running bazzite. I do all my gaming generally in gaming mode. but there is one game I have to run in the desktop environment. I want my desktop to be rendered at 1440p internally, but outputting 4k. in other words I just want a 1440p resolution, but don't want my monitor to do deal with the upscaling. is this possible? latest bazzite. 5900x rx7800xt 32g ram b550m don't think specs are relevant but provided regardless. cheers!

thank you so much for responding. I have tried using gamescope, but I just got errors in the terminal, and didnt do anything whilst running games. would you mind directing me with an up to date guide to use gamescope in KDE desktop? the tutorial I've followed did not work. (I'm a windows moron( sorry, meant to sat direct me TO a tutorial. I don't expect you to write one lol @Kyle Gospo I figured it out now. it's my game specifically. gamescope will blackscreen and crash when launched in its vulkan renderer mode and the resolution is set different to the external display. beamng in vulkan relies on full screen res, it cannot display anything other than that. it is conflicting with the lower res set by gamescope and crashing. is there really no way to set a different desktop res to the output in this OS?

You can set any resolution you want in your desktop display settings

I understand that, but then my tv will do the upscaling. I want the to gpu to deal with any upscaling. 1440 internally put out at a 4k screen. different internal resolution to external, as I stated. I know we can change resolution.

Neither KDE nor GNOME offer built in upscaling other than what happens downstream, ie between the GPU and display

If you want control over the upscaling the only option is to leave the display at native and let gamescope upscale To do that you use the launch options to set a real res and target res

cheers man, it's all good. it's not compatible on one game and that's it. so I'll just leave it be I think specifically beamng when choosing it's vulkan launcher. it black screens in gamemode on bazzite that way aswell. only the directx version launches with gamescope. however, in desktop environment it will launch in vulkan without gamescope, but crashes with it on. hope that might help anyone else having issues with beamng specifically.
