Okay cool.
@tryhardsoccermomswag Isn't it supposed to see the merged lvm already?
I have no real experience with lvm
Did I do it right?
Ah
yes that looks right
now you're done and can boot into bazzite setup
Mind walking me thou the next part too? To ensure I do it right
What exactly do you want to do?
partition wise
C drive for os, 1 drive for steam, 1 drive for local file sharing
ah easily done in the advanced setup
C drive as in a windows dual boot?
No duel boot
ah you just want an extra partition for file sharing
okay so
Manual Partitioning Scheme:
mount point: /boot/efi
format: EFI system partition (also known as vfat)
size: 300MB
mount point: /boot
format: ext4
size: 1GB
mount point:
format: btrfs
size: [max]
mount point: /
format: btrfs (subvolume)
mount point: /var
format: btrfs (subvolume)
mount point: /var/home
format: btrfs (subvolume)
This is what you need to doHow do I do that
just change [max] to whatever space you want available for file sharing
@Xaniene in bazzite advanced setup
Select all 3 drives?
Wait.
you need to advanced custom
you just select first drive
because it will auto select the other drives needed now
hopefully
okay i guess you do ahve to select all disks
weird
@tryhardsoccermomswag please help
you need to create a new partition
and set it up as LVM and combine all disks
Create Volume Group I believe it is
Yes
select all disks
and max it out
then press ok
Done
Do I give it a name?
if you want
not necessary but you can
What's next
Can you show your screen?
I'm going by what im seeing on your screen because i have near zero experience with volume groups
You need to select the LVM volume
the folder
Ok selected
Wait no this ain't gonna work I'm stupid you need to create the boot outside of the LVM
can you revert?
You need to make a normal physical volume on the boot drive with at least the FAT32 partition
just install the os on one drive
Yeah
second and third drive do it post install
Can you still make a merged drive post install?
easier than fighting with blivet
i don't think so
Ok steps please?
you need merged drive?
yes
but the fat32 partition needs to be outside of the merged drive
otherwise it won't be recognized by uefi
from what i understand you want 1 drive for os, 1 drive from games and 1 drive for sharing
Yes
No duel boot
so in windows is like you have a c drive, a d drive and a e drive
you dont need merged drive for that
correct?
Correct
Yes but you're going to be wasting a lot of disk space
well yes but its more complicated than have a three separate drive
thats what most people will do in windows
I plan to get a proper nas later
you dont need do lvm on desktop
This is just temporary solutions
this is not server
What I was thinking was:
OS/bootloader on physical partition
Volume Group with subvolumes for file sharing, home and games
btrfs
choose only the drive you want as os here
@asen23 can't btrfs do JBOD natively?
that's basically what you're doing with lvm2
dunno
doing this is way too complicated
@asen23 the problem with just making whole disks with a few mount points is going to be wasted space in the end
Like you don't know if you're going to use 2TB for file sharing
and 2TB for games
what if it ends up being 3TB games and 1TB file sharing
that's where LVM comes in 😛
make folder
setting up lvm is not for average person
that's how it was set up before
because they choose all drive
will automatic handle LVM if you select all drives?
if so, then just do that
all drives will be wiped
anyway
also rather than arguing
Installing now let me get discord back up
@Xaniene which way you want it
I don't mind losing some space if it means it's functional lol but I appreciate both of you
@Xaniene Did you select automatic?
if you just make the LVM nothing is going to end up being installed
I believe so? I can handle the other drives once in desktop environment right?
That's what I did last time
Yeah
If you went back and just select 1 disk and press automatic
you can handle the other drives in desktop
both will function but different drive will be simpler to manage than lvm
Let me get this installed and discord
@CheckYourFax btw can you even manage lvm in gui?
Sadly this is what I'm use to
@asen23 yes
you mean blivet right
no post install
not on the drive the OS is isntalled no
i only touched lvm a little in my minipc/server lol
but any other drives will be fine
as long as you are prepared to reformat
yeah this is what most people do
you gotta manage your mount points if you want efficient use of the space on the disks @Xaniene
you know how to do it?
Let's get discord up so I can keyboard be easier to walk me thou stuff at that point
No 😦
just mount each drive as a folder
^
and manage everything else with a folder inside that
lmao
as long as you don't run out of disk space you're fine with that option
You two are amazing
Let me finish installing and this should go faster
I am not tech illarate thankfully
So I learn fairly fast
@asen23 best way would've been to use the motherboard's raid controller so it shows up as one disk in bazzite and you don't have to deal with OS level stuff and can just press automatic and you're done
If secure boot is on
enroll mok
Secure boot is off
then continue boot
Thankies
what if one drive die
lvm has the same issue though :clueless:
Galactic particle dust says hello
well yes, what i said just mount each drive independently
so if one drive die it doesnt take out data from other
true
Are you two a couple by anychance
no lmao
hahahaha
You should be xD
lmao
its just, idk why are you putting lvm and raid in desktop
Don't worry I won't tell anyone
that thing belongs in nas or server
yeah true, and you can just choose which drive you want to use in steam in anyway so for most games you're fine
Woo keyboard
@Xaniene once you're on desktop, can you show your current partition setup?
with the partition manager
for file sharing you might want to make a custom mount point, for games its not needed
Never seen the zram0 one before so not sure whats going on there
just keep default /dev/xxxx mount point
zram is used by bazzite, don't worry about it
zram is your "swap" dont worry about it
the zram isn't actually a disk
Oh okies
its kept in your ram
So Firecuda is my OS drive
the other 2 nvmes are basically Steam and Lan file sharing
so how do I do this correctly
just make a new btrfs partition on the other drives
thats it
the ones that are unallocated
for the one you want to use for file sharing you might want to set the mount point to the folder you want to use for file sharing
do this first
then create a partition
but you can also just set your file sharing tool to use the default mount point
thats probably easier
yes, make all your drives btrfs and use all available space
?
use everyone
everyone
then ok
after that do this
https://docs.bazzite.gg/Advanced/KDE_Partition_Manager_Auto_Mount_Guide/
KDE Partition Manager Auto Mount Guide - Bazzite Documentation
Bazzite is a custom image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices.
same thing for data?
yes
Yes
Hit "Apply" I Take it? or?
Yah
disks will then be available from their default mountpoints /dev/xxxxxxxx
ok they are formating now
file manager will show them in root
in devices*
Ok so Asen had asked me about the issues I was running into before I decided ot reformat
so i'll go over those real fast
Anytime the PC went back to the lock screan, Steam would break to the point I'd have to close it and restart it Cause hitting "Refresh" on the image banner would cause it to spam online users nonestop
Sometimes clicking firefox would not bring firefox up, nor make a process, and I'll have to wait like 2 mins then try again
KDE was starting to constantly crash more then usual
Some minor issues with games that are probably resolvable with some minor help/tweaking
Clicking links in things like telegram/discord took multiple times clicking to finally get them to registered I clicked it (not a issue with my mouse)
Also steam would constatnly make me re-point it to the games drive and re-apply it to the storage area
This could be a issue with the fact that I have to constantly enter the password on the drives or else steam wont see it so maybe this is something simple
enter the password on the drives? wdym
if I click games now, it'll ask for a password
if i don't do that each time I restart, steam wont see it
oh thats normal
you need to automount it first
and requires me to re-enter it into storage area of steam
see here
linux unlike windows doesnt mount secondary drive ootb
the links in telegram/discord is web link or what links?
Yes just normal web links
would you mind walking me though this part please?
looks like its linked to firefox not opening
I'm at step 5
you pick a folder name for your drives
/var/mnt/games
and /var/mnt/data
is probably goodwhat if I just want it to be the drive itself?
it doesnt work like that, you need a folder
I don't know if I can do it that way
but atm it sounds like I need to create a random folder on the drive?
but it will show up as drives in dolphin
ok so go to the games drive and make a folder?
/var/mnt is special drive
no just do
mkdir /var/mnt/games
and mkdir /var/mnt/data
or you can go to /var/mnt in dolphin
and create it in the gui?
change the path to the folder i mentioned
open more
it gives error a valid path is required
can you give screenshot
mkdir /var/mnt/games trying to paste this into path spits 'a valid path is required unless i'm doing it wrong
oh dont include the mkdir
mkdir is a command to create a folder
?
its make directory
yes now open more
ok its open
can you give me screenshot i dont really remember the content
paste this
defaults,compress-force=zstd:3,noatime,lazytime,commit=120,space_cache=v2,nofail
vanything I should check or uncheck here?
its all good
click ok
and repeat for the data drive
same for data drive?
yes the only difference should be the path
UUID for identify too correct?
yes
ok done on both
now type
sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo mount -a
in terminal and see if any error shows upmount: /var/mnt/games: mount point does not exist.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
mount: /var/mnt/data: mount point does not exist.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
uh create the folder first
just any random folder?
type this
sudo mkdir /var/mnt/games /var/mnt/data
in terminal
and do this againmkdir: cannot create directory ‘/var/mnt/games’: Permission denied
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/var/mnt/data’: Permission denied
add sudo
forgor
at the beginning?
i changed the msg earlier
yes in the beginning
after that do both of this command in terminal
sudo chown $USER:$USER /var/mnt/games
sudo chown $USER:$USER /var/mnt/data
just did this and nothing popped up
ok good, check in the dolphin if you click the drive it should point to each respective folder
Just did these
its good probably
try adding the drive as steam library
like so?
cause thats how I normally do it
uhh try restarting steam first
looks like it still detecting old path
but yes thats the way
it should show up as /var/mnt/games
open the dropdown
it defaults b ack to run/media but in the drop down it shows it as you said
maybe its just internal name, looks like the path is correct tho
now the data drive
so you want to setup samba again?
Yes please
but if we can make it not show all the other folders like in the past that'd be great
I allowed samba permeantly though the firewall already
can you use
nano
?(I haven't updated the os yet hopefully this wont cause any issues)
not sure what nano is
ok so do
brew install micro
in terminal to make thing easierDone
after that
micro /etc/containers/systemd/samba.container
it looks like that opened up a editor of some sort
paste this
wait
ok now paste that
ctrl + s
(I don't have any folders made on the data drive yet just a headsup)
yeah this will share the whole drive for now
or you want to setup specific folder?
Drive is fine
ok, do ctrl + s
how i normally do it is just the drive (done that)
it should prompt for sudo type y
it kicked me back to the editor and I closed it accidently is that ok?
try
cat /etc/containers/systemd/samba.container
what is the output[Container]
Environment="SAMBA_VOLUME_CONFIG_guest=[Guest Share]; path=/shares/guest; guest ok = yes; browseable = yes"
Image=ghcr.io/servercontainers/samba:smbd-only-latest
Network=host
Volume=/var/mnt/data:/shares/guest:z
[Service]
Restart=always
[Install]
WantedBy=default.target
ok its fine
awsome!
Whats next teach
now
sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl start samba
Done
what is
sudo systemctl status samba
samba.service

Jan 05 11:42:59 bazzite systemd-samba[17457]: >> CMD: exec docker CMD
ok now try adding random file in the drive and check
if its worked then you are pretty much done
Do I have the roomies access it the same way like in the prior
yes
its the same thing but now containerized
Moving some files now to test
questions while I wait for files to move
but now they shouldnt get prompted for username and password
Will steam make me repoint the drive doing it this way or no?
it should stay
oh thank god
and what about the other weird Issues I was having that I mentioned?
also doing one restart for sanity checking isnt a bad idea
(I'll do that after the files move)
the kde crash is hard to diagnose without further info, the firefox i suspect nvidia
not sure about steam banner thingy
what is equilvient to a 3070TI for amd?
no downgrades plz
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html
i use this for initial comparison
Tom's Hardware
The GPU benchmarks hierarchy 2024: Ten years of graphics card hardw...
We've run hundreds of GPU benchmarks on Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphics cards and ranked them in our comprehensive hierarchy, with over 80 GPUs tested.
(Kinda sick of nvidia anyways, every driver update breaks my driver or causes so many issues)
obviously its not perfect but gives a rough idea
so I clicked htis but nothing happen and now i have to keep clicking it unitl it registers
if you paste the link into terminal and ctrl + click it, does that also happen?
works fine
well probably flatpak nvidia driver lol
also if I update the system will it break everything we just did?
the flatpak are separate from the system
ok cause I haven't ran the bazzite updater since getting to desktop
if the flatpak is the issue then reinstalling wont do much
you need either wait for update or rollback (not easy in flatpak)
I'm referring to the system updates mostly, I haven't ran that since getting the image back up
the system shouldnt affect flatpak
and it should auto updates anyway
Roger, so the auto mount/steam stuff/samba it wont affect?
yep
no its set to manual by default from what I see
this is desktop or deck image?
Desktop
having roomie check file sharing now
it should auto update
It says its set to manual and its always says that everytime I've formatted bazzite o.o
you can confirm by
systemctl status ublue-update.timer
which one said that?oh yes cause its handled by other service
its always set to manual everytime i've formatted, I've always had to click "System update"
its not needed lol
Roomie is testing file sharing
Shes saying she can't access the files
do I need to reboot first?
you shouldnt need to
whats the error and whats the step to connect again
just confirming
its the inet ip i give them right? on eno1?
or the loopback lo inet ip?
should be something that starts with 192.168
All the error said was that it could not find the IP or any files (which it is the correct IP just verified) so i am unsure on where to go from here
hmm
let me grab the updates for the system real fast then try restarting?
sure
having her re-test
Its working now
uh weird
but great i guess
check steam drive, should be fine
steam switched back to /var/home
after the restart 😦
uh yes its default library
I made the game drive its default
but does it shows up
in the dropdown
Yes
which one have the star
it defaulted it back to home
the star
I had the star on var/mnt/games
does the name changed?
ahh
its probably reset because the name changed
how do we make steam keep the game drive as default even after a resetart (if thats possiable under this OS)
it shouldnt change anymore try make it default again
it probably got confused
restart again to confirm?
yep
you can also check if the samba still work too
Steams fixed, having roomie check
samba is still working
great, no weird folder nonsense right 😅
Uh she didn't say just gave me a OK sign with her hands LOL
well the setup is done then
well barring the flatpak issue
(No weird folder nonesense from what shes saying)
How do I turn off the Top left corner shaningans again?
(KDE)
Got it thanks so much
Whered the other guy go, I wanted to thank him too
ok so it seems the issue only happens on firefox
if i install chrome i don't suffer the link clicking problem
The amount of learning i've done this morning though holy my brain hurts
yeah it can be overwhelming but if you take it step by step its not that bad
weird part is I'm a computer tech by trade
for the firefox problem maybe worth opening another thread to see if other people have same issue
but mostly for windows 7/10 Primarly
most of my windows debugging skill easily transferred to linux
I use to do virus removal, software recommendation, Software conflict testing, software anyalises testing, etc
is there anyway I can change the boot animantion kinda like I am able to with the legion go?
the motherboard logo?
like when you restart
the part after it shows bios
uhh what currently shown there?
the bazzite symbol and some loading animantion then it goes to the lock screen
I was wondering if the boot animantion can be adjusted to something like steam OS boot up with like Elden ring or something
i think you need custom image for that
Ah dang
if you want to go into the rabbit hole
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Plymouth
bazzite one is simpler, you need to replace this image afaik

How do i make my audio device stick when tv goes off/back on or restart
wdym by stick
anytime tv is turned off and back on or pc is restart it defaults to to the wrong audio
this happens in windows too
if you choose here, it doesnt stick?
so mine uses GA104 high definition audio controller
but if i restart/turn tv off it will always switch to 'starship/matisse HD
i think you can with some script
so I was wondering if theirs a way to default it to GA104
but im not sure how to do that, create a thread probably
ok thanks, need a break atm before we figure out anything else brain hurts to much
how do I close this thread/or mark it as answered ?
@Xaniene to add account add this lines
and change the volume config to
change the username and password to whatever you want, you also can rename the share in the bracket like
[My Share]
or [Samba]
or whatever you want. Also if you want the shares to be readonly (other people cannot add file) remove the read only = no;
from the config
complete example
after that you can do sudo systemctl restart samba
@Xotic bork there should be instrustions here to auto mount the drives towards the top
@Xotic bork should be starting right here
Hey @asen23 Could you help @Xotic bork figure out a error on the auto mount for one of their drives if you get a chance?
whats the error, also maybe creating new thread is better to not mix issue
i just rebooted and i got this error on one of my drives
i did the same things as i did on my other drive that worked
you are mounting ext4 drive as btrfs
what is
cat /etc/fstab
also did you not check with daemon-reload?deamon-reload?
this one
if you messed up fstab you can have unbootable system
oh i did
it did not spit out error?
it gave me this error
next time if that step spits out any error you need to either fix it or undo what you do
anyway what is the output of this
run it on a terminal?
yes
can you copy it here
wait how do i paste it regularly
use ``` before and after
not quotes
backticks
below escape or to the left of one
ahh mb

replace it by that
can you use nano?
whats nano?
ok do
brew install micro
and then micro /etc/fstab
you can edit that like in normal editor
nano is a cli text editor, micro is also that but a bit easier to usejust copy and paste this right?
yep make sure the formatting is like before
the number of lines reduced is that fine?
the only difference should be the last drive option
which line is missing
thats how when i pasted it
should be fine
ctrl + s, then y
alr done
ctrl + q to exit
do this again
didnt give me any errors this time
check in dolphin
should be fine now
its mounted now
should i reboot?
not really needed but you can to make sure
alr
aight that worked tysm Im a new linux user so im not really familiar with this stuff
