Spier & Mackay Sizing Help!
Hi! I got some Spier gift cards for the holidays and want to grab a new suit before this boxing day sale ends, but I'm having trouble figuring out what size I should order.
I believe that I need a 40 in both the Core and Neo Cut, but I'm worried that the Regular will be too long, and the Short will be too short. The sleeve length on the Short is definitely closer to correct. I'm also unsure if the Slim or Contemporary would be better.
There's also the Tailored Fit on the Red Label suits, and I think I would need a 38R since those seem to be roomier and shorter.
What cut and size would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
My Measurements:
- Height: 5'8"
- Neck:" 16
- Chest: 39
- Waist: 35
- Sleeve: 33.25
- Shoulder: 18.5
Some example jackets:
Navy Pronto Uomo
- Size: 38 Short
- Pit to pit: 19.5
- Sleeves from shoulder seam: 24
- Shoulder seams across front: 18
- Across waist: 18.5
- Length from bottom of collar: 29.25
Brown Herringbone Polo Sportcoat
- Size: 42R (I've had this tailored at the waist and sleeves)
- Sleeves from shoulder seam 23.5
- Shoulder seams across front 18.5
- Across waist 18
- Length from collar 29.25 (I don't know how this can be the same length as above. The jacket is noticeably longer!)
J Crew Thompson Blazer, Navy Donegal
- Size: 38 Short
- Length from collar 28.75
Don't have the rest of the measurements, but it is definitely small. I can almost get away with it if I don't button.

I prefer Spier’s Neo Contemporary over most any other cut, but they’re all generally sized for the same body size. I would generally suggest you go for contemporary over slim, as Spier is slim as hell even in their wider cuts.
That said, your best course of action is to take measurements of all of your jackets, and order the size that’s closest based on the sizing chart. Disregard their tagged size entirely.
Worst case is they offer a free return on your first go, so order what’s closest to your measured garment and vibe check based on that.
That's the problem I'm having. The 40R is longer than all of these jackets, and the 40S is shorter than all of them
The Neo 40R is roughly a full inch longer. Would that be too long?
Longer in the sleeve or the body? If the sleeve - those are fairly easy to adjust, and they build in allowance
The center length of the coat.
I also don't know how the first two coats have the same measured length when the brown one is clearly longer when worn

Probably how it rests on the shoulders - I feel like the brown is definitely visually larger, but not obscenely so.
I wouldn’t worry too much about an inch here or there. I think a 40S Contemporary Neo is pretty bang on your jackets at 28.9.
If you like it, slim isn’t the end of the world. You could always get it to check the sleeve / body length, and return it if it’s too trim for your liking. At least you’d have a better ballpark to go on at that point.
Is the J Crew sportcoat too short? Here's another angle (forgive the mess and dirty mirror)
Sadly they don't have 40S in that Charcoal
Side note: How major are the quality differences between the Red Line, Dino Filarte and Vitale Barberis Canonicol versions of this suit? There's a $100 jump in price between each (before sales)

Looks fine, though I often prefer a bit longer
Main line will be better than red label, but no idea about the different mills - VBC is a pretty well known mill though
Dino Filarte is perfectly serviceable. VBC will probably have a bit more oomph and depth of color.
Thanks for the insight. I went with the Red Label as I don't wear tailoring that frequently, but can always return if the fit/quality isn't there
Sweet. Hope it works out for you!
