Self Hosting - Advice please!
Hi all,
I've setup a minecraft server, using the official .jar from Minecraft (java edition), it's running in a linux (ubuntu) VM on a DL360 I have
I've set it up purely for my son / me / wife to play - working fine been running a week
I've stumbled across Dynmap, which looks ace and I wanted to set that up, but it looks like you need to use a custom server (bukkit/fabric/paper etc) which has led me down a slightly confusing rabbit hole
So some questions if anyone is able to help!
1) Do I need to use bukkit or similar for Dynmap?
2) If so... what 'variant' would you recommend ?
3) Any other mods you'd suggest?
4) Any general guidance would be very welcome!
NB: Running java version 1.21.4 with 8 cores / 16GB RAM (though plenty of spare resources if needed)
Thanks!

Other alternative that better/similar with Dynmap that I know is BlueMap
It has features like full 3d map on a web with all sort of things from Dynmap
Yeah I was looking at BlueMap a minute ago, but again I believe it needs a 'modded' server (bukkit etc?)
Prerequisites
A Spigot/Paper, Sponge, Fabric or Forge server
Which then kind of goes back to my confusion on what these are and their pros/cons haha
Yeah, all plugins/mods in general had to have a modified minecraft jar to load it
1-2. Grab papermc, just drag the jar into ur folder (replace vanilla jar) and start. It'll automatically convert your world
3. For vanilla? Nothing really.
4. If you need to expose the map to the web I recommend cloudflare tunnels
Pros of papermc: much more performant
Cons: breaks vanilla parity in some places
Pros of fabric: vanilla compliant, install lithium mod and whatever else you want and you'll be set
Cons: none for your use case
Nvm sry reread ur request, ur only playing with your son so 100% grab fabric
It's once again a drag and drop replacement for vanilla mc's server jar
Amazing, thank you!
Once the world is 'converted' is it possible to 'convert' it back to 'normal' in the future, should it be wanted>
Lithium just looks like optimisations right?
By the way with the BlueMap you've talked earlier, theres a fabric one and it should perfectly fit in your use case
https://modrinth.com/plugin/bluemap/version/5.5-fabric
Modrinth
5.5-fabric - BlueMap
Download BlueMap 5.5-fabric on Modrinth. Supports 1.21–1.21.4 Fabric. Published on Nov 19, 2024. 3200 downloads.
Oh ace, thanks
Yep, it optimize quite a number of things
reading up on how to install fabric... seem to have a million versions haha
just grab the latest stable version and you should be ready to go
https://fabricmc.net/use/server/
I'm very confused why it asks for fabric loader version (isnt that what im downloading?!) and installer version?!
The server itself is a Fabric-loader
and the Installer is just.. you know, an installer ?
perhaps you have a misunderstanding ?
@Gr44 https://fabricmc.net/use/installer/
You can use this one and choose the Server tab to install it automatically
Yeah seen that, I'm using ubuntu though... and the universal jar is v1.0.1 which seems wrong?
im tinkering, will work it out cant be that hard
For fabric, you don't even need to convert it back. It just uses vanilla worlds
Oh nvm I thought you are on a Window device to set this up
pardon for my mistake
My machine is windows, server is running on a ubuntu VM
For paper yes with some file renaming
There's guides online for both
Ubuntu server
yeah i get that
Alright so, you download the jar from this website, rename it to server.jar, put it to a seperate folder, and use this startup in the same folder to start it up:
java -jar server.jar
Yup! Try setting xms and xmx to smth like 6G
Just to make sure you have a smooth experience
All up and running thanks guys... odd, seems to be buggy using edge - chrome is fine however
Thats weird, I'm using edge and have no issue at all whatsoever
odd, the nether doesnt load on either of em but never mind 😄
Be cool iff you could see underground too
you could see some open caves tho
mmm, actually chrome seems a little odd too
doesnt render it all unless you zoom in enough then it renders a little area in your active viewport
and by the way, if you wants to have a smoother experience then use this mod:
https://modrinth.com/plugin/chunky/version/VkAgASL1
Modrinth
Chunky 1.4.27 - Chunky
Download Chunky 1.4.27 on Modrinth. Supports 1.21.2–1.21.4 Fabric. Published on Nov 5, 2024. 33751 downloads.
ahhh Chunky, just like me 😄
yeah xD
and make sure to do that in both 3 worlds
ah just did update map now fine
was probably still rendering it or something
yeah pretty sure it was bluemap since it needs to render the world in order to upload to the web
damn just seen you can fly around as the player, that's ace
