Cloudflare DNS not working with wildcard

I'm testing out cloudflare and it seems to work with A records, but not if it's a wildcard. We're on the freeplan, but there's no indication that it requires a paid account so I'm assuming it's not that. We do have an SSL for it and the main domain does work with wildcards 100% fine. Seems i'm missing a step?
