Why do my pants look like this?

This is just one of my pairs of pants, and I'm very into the vintage pleated trousers look, but a lot of them have the same problem. The crotch just generally looks unflattering and too large, for lack of a better term. Are pants like these just in need of alterations, or are they a total loss?

Is the waist the right size? There's some pulling which might suggest they're too small.

a 36 is usually nice and snug for me depending on the cut, these are around a 38 though

If you're really into vintage, try sizing up in the waist and using suspenders, the suspenders can help allow pleats sit naturally. Also, this may be a sign that the hips don't fit properly, consult a tailor and if this is the case ask them to let the hips out. Should be $20-40 There's a youtube channel called askokley (or askokely, don't remember which). He hyper focuses on the vintage drape cut and has amazing info

I am very much a fan of suspenders, and the 36" pants I have fit quite nicely with them. as far as sizing up goes, i've tried some 40" pants, including ones with suspenders, and they look almost clownish on me. was considering taking these pants to get alterations anyways (bring in the waist, hem, etc) and I was really just wondering if it would be worth it for pants like these more than anything. i also love askokey and watch his videos religiously, it's just a bit hard for me to apply his ideas to pants that are off the rack or thrifted.

Yeah that's fair, all his stuff is vintage cut and made to measure personally See about ironing in a crease on the main pleat down the leg, that should help shape the trousers quite a bit

they do have a crease in them down the main pleat, you can kind of see it in the second image. it has just occurred to me that my problems also may be due in part to how thin the fabric is, at the very least that's why the pleat doesnt hold very well.

Yeah, I've gotten the best results from thicker pants with a lining to at least the knee. The lining helps keep the exterior pant fabric independent of my legs and they drape/flow better I've been going to good stores, trying on different pants and brands, noting sizing, and going to ebay to see what I can find and taking the second hand trousers to a tailor. Alot more work, but also less money

Unfortunately it's tough to tell without seeing the pants in their entirety. It could just be that the taper is too strong. If you could post a full body pic that would help a lot.
