Patch or darn vintage carhartts?

I have some vintage carhartt double knees with a big hole on the right side of the lap. See photo. That’s the pocket showing through underneath. Want to repair them cause I’m afraid they might rip way open. But should I have them darned or should I patch them? And if patching, should I do the patch on the inside or outside? And if outside, rectangle or try to match the shape of the hole? Inside could be neat cause I could leave the raw edge of the hole, which could look cool. But inside also risks making it look like my boxers are showing through (depending on the patch material/color/pattern) given the location of the hole. And if going down the patch route, any color/pattern suggestions? What do yall think? Thanks!

Inside patch is my vote Could cut and fold back the outside of the hole so you get a cleaner line around the patch

And try and match the pants color?

it's personal preference; it can be fun to use a contrasting fabric scrap to patch, especially for a casual pant

The hole is too large to be darned, Itll be more secure with a patch on the inside.

Kiriko sells cool packs of patch fabrics, doing a sashiko style patch would be pretty cool
