trying to build up my winter jacket collection

what are some staples i should go for? styles, materials, colors? thank you guys happy sunday :)))) Edit - I'm in Canada, southern Ontario - we've had a few mild winters, but boy can it get cold too, I don't want to build a collection of jackets for the one -30 day though, but generally in winter we can expect 0 to -10 C, with like a week of -20

What do you like, and how cold /wet does it get

Do you mind giving some idea of what sort of winter weather you are dealing with, which styles you are interested in general, etc? You'll probably get responses you find more helpful/useful with a bit more detail on what you're looking for There are tons of cool coat options and really no limit to the kinds of styles

true that - should've mentioned - i'm in Toronto area, it can get cold - but we've had a pretty mild winter last year - i like things are relatively simple, not flashy or heavily branded, good quality that lasts a long time if not forever with care - i don't want anything extra long that passes my knees, i think i'd like it to sit around my thighs at most - thank you it's hard to predict canadian winter tbh, it's not just 'cold' like everyone says lol, it can be cold and dry, or have weeks where it's warmer but wet and the snow is like a slush, it's also changed a lot from season to season as far as styles, my wardrobe as a whole is getting more refined, I like the look of a car coat but I think it's too long for me, I think a parka of some sort is needed but I don't like how many of them have large branding and don't look business ready, i also saw something about a mackinaw cruiser jacket and thought that looked kind of cool but maybe too much workwear vibes? sorry i'm really open to anything

Id rec figuring out your needs and going from there. for example, something for: - cold & heavy precipitation - mild & heavy precipitation - business settings And so forth. Parkas aren't really bizcaz for most people, but that's also not really the point lol they're for protection against the elements (they're also staples in some styles, but that doesn't seem to be where you're heading?)

Idk what it is like in toronto, but here in the pnw where it is constantly wet, plenty of people wear casual/technical jackets over their business clothes. Unless you need your whole wardrobe to be businessy for your job or something, I would recommend branching out for weather protection.

I agree, I would prioritize a down parka of some sort first that can handle heavy weather then a wool coat second. You take your coat off when you get into your destination anyway

In Toronto as well. Short answer - Parka + Down Puffer. Plenty of options/ brands to choose from.

Lots of good wool coat options. Look at something like a balmacaan or duffle and can be hard wearing

i was gonna say duffle too

You can pick more conservative colors but both of these are on the shorter side for wool coats like you mentioned you preferred

The cut of the coat will be somewhat tied to the cut of whatever else you are wearing, especially trousers Which is why things like images of what you're looking for / usually wear can get you better recommendations, but hope this is a good start for you

Thanks guys, I like the one two combination of a wool coat and a down parka
