Is this coat too formal looking?
Hey I was just wondering what you guys think about this coat, does it look formal or casual?
https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E471723-000/00?colorDisplayCode=68&sizeDisplayCode=005
And do you have any recommendations to coats like this that look casual and can be worn with everyday clothes

or this one is also an option
You can easily dress a coat like that down. Really depends on what sort of lifestyle you live though - "formal" and "casual" are extremely context dependent. Hard to say without any idea of what sort of life you're living or style you're into
If you're in high school or something I could see it being too formal of a coat, but if you're an adult who does more than goes to football games it should be fine
Yeah im an adult, I'd mostly use it on dates and just going out on a cold day to the bar/coffee shop
Agree with rawbert-oh, pretty flexible coat based on what you wear with it
if you have more formal stuff under it it'll look more formal, if you're pretty casual, say jeans, sneakers, hoodie as an exmaple, it'll look more casual
Only thing I would look out for is the material mix on the coat. If you're looking for something warm for winter you might be disappointed
And might be worth perusing used/vintage options for wool pieces
That makes sense thanks
Any good brands I can look for?
Honestly around that same price range I feel like vintage / surplus stores are a good bet. You can probably find something cheaper that's 100% wool with a cool cut and try it on in person to make sure the fit works. They've been making coats in these styles for ages so there are tons of them
No specific brand recs otherwise, sorry - but maybe someone else can help give you some to look for
I'll look into it
thanks

Vintage 80's Men Wool Coat in Navy Blue
Vintage 80's wool blend coat in navy blue. Made from 100% pure new wool and lined with quilted viscose fabric.
in terms of vintage brands, pendleton, j.crew, ralph lauren and its diffusion lines (polo ralph lauren, chaps by ralph lauren [that exact name, not just "chaps"]) and many military overcoats all fit the bill
all four you've chosen can be suitably formal or casual, though my personal opinion is favoring the uniqlo jackets
Would you say the uniqlo ones wouldnt last too long considering its a wool blend?

£75
and doesnt look too bad
that looks pretty good
Offer £65
trying to figure out of it will fit me
i normally wear large
I think longevity isnt the issue as much as Uniqlo coats are way outclassed at that price point
You can ask the seller for measurements
they are down at the bottom it says 48chest which might fit me but i guess ill risk the return postage
oh i see, i might go down to some vintage shops tomorrow see what i can find
Only thing Im worried about is i dont want to get something too formal
i have a bad eye for casual vs formal
there's more wiggle room with big coats than like, suits or something
in terms of formality
