connect to modded server
So I'm the one who uploaded the mods to a hosted server.
My friends can't log in and get the message "cannot join a modded server with a vanilla client"
The SMM is set to the server. The profile is set to Default.
(when I put this on modded I get error messages in smm)
Before I post this question here, I did some searching on the internet, but not many answers that I am very familiar with.
But from what I understand it seems that these mods must also be installed on my friends local game.
Is this correct?

some mod can be server only but otherwise ( most cases ) you need it on all clients ( all players need to install the same mod list with mod manager )
