Authentication required
Hey guys, I couldn't find this specific question via Google. I installed bazzite on my desktop, I skipped the password creation because nobody lives with me. I'm not too worried about that. So now when I try to install any applications from the store it says authentication required and I need to put in a password but I never made a password. I've tried "bazzite" but that's not cutting the mustard

Oh I did find a couple results - but they said bazzite is default pw but again that's showing "sorry, that didn't work"
I also just tried using the terminal to set a new password but that's not working either for authentication required...
It sort of appears I need to be the admin? I dont remember seeing an option for that. I am the only user on this machine
It should be username bazzite and password bazzite. Have you double checked that capslock is off? If you need to reset it, you can try this method in the docs https://docs.bazzite.gg/Advanced/Reset_Forgotten_User_Password/
Reset Forgotten User Password - Bazzite Documentation
Bazzite is a custom image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices - including your favorite handheld.
Hey! Thanks for the reply. It doesnt ask for username or anything - sorry for the fullscreenshot not sure how to snip yet on this OS
If you open a terminal, it will show your username@the-computer-name. lets see what is shows for your username
how do you snip a section btw, shift+pntsceen seems to snap both displays
oh ignore that i found it
Interesting the username has a capital B. Try Bazzite for the password
same result
you're probably going to need to reset it using the instructions above if you don't know what it is
Try one more thing, leave the password field blank, I doubt the installer would allow that though
how would i know what it is if i never set it? during install I unchecked the option for pw on sign in. and now in the OS i am met with this, so i used terminal to set one with passwd, but that doesnt work for the authentication
tried I cant hit enter or "authenticate"
i think wolfy meant in response to
passwd
https://askubuntu.com/questions/57620/getting-an-authentication-token-manipulation-error-when-trying-to-change-my-us old issue for ubuntu, but it could be a permissions problem perhaps
Ask Ubuntu
Getting an "Authentication token manipulation" error when trying to...
I am logging in to my Ubuntu Server using my username. Once I am logged in I am typing passwd command. Entering a new password but a second after getting following error messages:

oh ok
What happens if you try and install your flatpak from the terminal? e.g.
flatpak install flathub com.protonvpn.www
press 1 and enter
ah there it is
looked good for a second lol
If you do
sudo flatpak install flathub com.protonvpn.www
and put in the password in the terminal (it doesn't show anything while you type)
I'm thinking it might be something weird in the GUI password utility.
If not, you should be able to reset the password without knowing the password using this method above. https://docs.bazzite.gg/Advanced/Reset_Forgotten_User_Password/somethings is goofed up
did i miss something on the installer that should have made me admin or something?
im gunna get more coffee on /afk
If you type
groups
you should get Bazzite wheel
, if your user isn't in the wheel group you might have accidentally clicked something in advanced with the user setup or something went really wrong in the installer.in the terminal?
searching for
Authentication token manipulation error
leads to numerous Q/As about potential conflicts between /etc/passwd
and /etc/shadow
or potential permissions issuesI don't know what may have caused it other than specifically declining a password
Interesting! I guess Ill rerun the installer again and set it up
Ok, so its working as intended now - what i did was leave allow admin checked and unchecked require password for sign in.
While im here so i dont have to setup a new thread, is there a way to autohide the top bar similar to autohide windows taskbar?
oh im using gnome if that makes a difference
Good to know what the cause was
Yeah gnome is very different from KDE. Looks like you need to use an extension. Just open the "Extensions" and look for "Hide Top Bar" https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/545/hide-top-bar/
ez thanks for the help this morning
You are welcome. Hope you enjoy your time with Bazzite
hope you at least set a password this time, there is a reason we have the default password set to
bazzite
its so that people without access to a physical keyboard on handhelds can still get through the installer.
once you click on the user config in the installer the pre-filled password gets wiped and you need to physically make a password, if you dont make one then you end up with a broken system since you need an admin password
