Tips on improving my work style

I almost wear exclusively Uniqlo, usually polos and trousers. But I want to make my style a bit more interesting. Just curious what people suggest

you wanna get interesting? the fastest path to interesting is weird. take something you’re fond of/passionate about, look for themed bags and patterned shirts and funny socks oh and silly hats i think everyone’s fashion style could be improved with a healthy dose (or overdose depending on preference) of whimsy and joy i do also realize you’re saying work. a funny keychain could help too if your uniform or dress code is strict

Have a look through Zeo's great business casual inspo album here, you might get some ideas! Otherwise, finding inspo in #waywt or other places would be a great start as there's many many different directions you could go in https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1240355583538761901 Sorry fixed the link Lots more pics inside that thread if you open it up :)

It’s not too strict thankfully. Most of my posts are from Fridays where you basically can wear anything

But I try to look somewhat professional Monday to Thursday

Does your workplace have a dress code Monday to Thursday? Do you want to wear more interesting outfits for the whole week or just Fridays?
Echo-Ecco.ExE
Echo-Ecco.ExEOP3mo ago
Kinda. It’s technically smart casual but people get away with wearing T-shirts if they’re a decent quality I think I have Fridays organised as those are what I usually post in #waywt So I’m focusing on the smart casual end of the week I like a lot of those but I can only wear that sorta style in the cold months here. I forgot to mention that I live in a humid climate so I find it tricky to think of fashionable work outfits that I won’t sweat in

I think the suggestions from tun are already very good as a starting point. I think from me I'd say play around with tucked Polo's to change the outfit proportions or even try some casual shirts, maybe something chambray or linen
Echo-Ecco.ExE
Echo-Ecco.ExEOP3mo ago
Maybe some chambray because I hate how much maintenance linen requires. I like the look of linen but takes so much effort. I have some linen pants that I like but I can’t wear them often because of the maintenance

add texture, knit polos, pants with a bit more something to them than smooth cotton

As you can probably see I am a Uniqlo :uniqlo: fan

in addition to wearing lightweight clothes and exploring different colors/patterns/materials/choices in fit i'd consider accessory choice - different shoes or a different watch might give more interest if you're looking for specific visual cues I'd check the specific users in that album for their #waywt posts in jun-aug (iirc you can filter by date) particularly art, leisirely, meatwater, and kyn. oman121 isn't featured in there but would also fit

I am considering changing my shoes to something more comfortable but also stylish. I was looking at New Balance the past week And I was contemplating getting an Apple Watch

Do you have any inspo? I ask because it's not clear to me what you're aiming for - at the moment your style doesn't seem to have a clear direction beyond "guy wearing clothes". You can elevate with some nicer items for sure, but the next step up might involve having a clearer vision for what you're trying to achieve.

It’s tough because I have a lot of inspiration I am often inspired by fashion in Film/TV of course For example I love the fashion in The Bear (Not a big statement) And I like a lot of the fashion from 90s-00s Richard Curtis films I’ll make a pinterest board and report back. It’ll be a wide range to start with

I made this just liking all the stuff that kept being given to me so it might be a bit of a microcosm https://pin.it/65o888kKK

And yes, it’s a lot Mostly 90’s stuff I think This might not be the epitome of all I like but it’s what pinterest kept showing me and I liked I’ve already started shifting my style to this, I think
Soup
Soup3mo ago
So I think something that I notice looking at a lot of the stuff on the pinterest is that there are lots of outfits that have high rise jeans/chinos etc, so a starting point would be try some pants with a higher rise than you have currently. I find that tucked shirts/tees look better to my eye with a higher rise on the bottom half so you end up with a more interesting proportion than 50/50

a couple notes in no particular order: - you've got a lot of oversized fits, layering, and high rise pants in your inspo, but im not seeing that come thru in your fits really - you might find more success moving away from uniqlo; the brand is fine but you might be feeling samey because uniqlo is pretty flat tbqh

One concern I have is that kind of style (tucked-in with high rise pants) might not work on my body shape. I’m not a tall person (5’8) so it might work against me
carrion
carrion3mo ago
most of the top posters in this discord are shorter than 5'8" it is genuinely not an issue

I definitely agree on the Uniqlo comment. I might only get basic tees from there now but I might slowly move into vintage store. I did get my first set of 00s Levi’s this week Fair point, thanks for pointing me back to reality I wish I could do more layering atm but it’s already hitting 30°c and above when it’s only Spring Trying to style for humidity ain’t fun chief

might be worth looking into things like proportion and pattern rather than layers

tucking vs untucking shirts, undoing [x] buttons, rolling or cuffing pants (especially wider fit ones), wearing shirts with patterns, etc. might be easy options it can be hard to scale style from cool weather to warm weather - imo consistent accessories are an easy way to do this
Echo-Ecco.ExE
Echo-Ecco.ExEOP3mo ago
The most I’ve done for accessories is some sunglasses and a casio watch
zeometer
zeometer3mo ago
it's a start - it looks like you enjoy bracelets so things like rings or necklaces are options

I would say, looking at your inspo that the oversized flowy shirts would potentially be a good choice for the heat. Secondhand PRL shirts (if available where you are) could be a low cost entry point to try it out
zeometer
zeometer3mo ago
i usually don't go so specific in recommendations but an oversized (striped) button down might be a good fit, similar energy to 90s movie protagonists and you get mileage out of tucking in or leaving it open

that's tough! When I head to the office (rare occassion) I'm usually layered regardless of the outside conditions because the building is always dry and frigid. I usually toss an upper layer into a tote for transit and put it on when I get there - but only you know if that's feasible for your situation!

I want to get some other stuff too I do have some hand-me-down chambray and similar shirts and they’re a bit big on me so they’re accidentally oversized. Might give them a try But idk what pants to pair them with
Soup
Soup3mo ago
From the inspo one thing that jumps out to me straight away would be a pair of high rise pleated chinos
Echo-Ecco.ExE
Echo-Ecco.ExEOP3mo ago
Aren’t those really baggy? I don’t baggy pants tho
Soup
Soup3mo ago
really depends on the chino itself

True Those are the baggiest that I would go I think If I could get some for cheap at a vintage store that’d be great

something with a little more room throughout the leg like that can also help with higher temperatures as the fabric is free to sit away from your skin that's what I would look for to try it out, or even on ebay
Echo-Ecco.ExE
Echo-Ecco.ExEOP3mo ago
That’s true. More airflow is necessary when it’s gets hot and swampy here So I got some ideas for shirts, pants, and accessories. Any suggestions on shoes? Btw all great help by everyone. Thank you 🙏
zeometer
zeometer3mo ago
the pleating really only adds volume to the space right below the belt line - if you go true to size it won't be so overwhelming overall from the album it looks like your heart is calling for chunky derbies or sneakers - doc martens (use their insoles) or solovieres for the derbies, and whatever you preference is for sneakers, be it a low profile vans/converse or chunky nike/NB i would check #waywt and see what people are pairing with high waisted pants (especially if they're cropped or cuffed in some way). in most cases people are wearing the same shoes year round 👍

I have been considering getting some brown leather shoes and I’d put a substantial insole in to help with comfort
