what colour overcoat
If you were buying one wool overcoat, what colour would you go for
I have suits in a range of colours, and wear them with both brown suede loafers and black derbies/Oxfords. My briefcase is black and if I was going to a meeting I'd have black shoes on even if suit was navy.
I was thinking navy but that might clash with navy suit and black shoes...or charcoal suit and black shoes...maybe black is in fact more versatile?

Charcoal herringbone will give you some nice texture and be quite versatile.
I have navy and black as well, which all I wear regularly.
I believe you will not go wrong with either.
I also have a green which sees less use. Another tan that is also not worn that often.

But worried about getting hit with customs fees etc then not being able to return
