Deciding on an Overcoat
I'm looking to get a Polo Coat or a Balmacaan, but am having difficulty deciding on which style would suit me best. In Fall and Winter I tend to wear chunky knits and chords or a tweed sports coat for something on the more fancy side. One factor to consider is that I'm short and quite muscular. I've heard advice that both long coats and doublebreasted coats aren't great for short men.... but I kinda don't really care. I want that dramatic swish and the fact that I'm short isn't gonna stop me! What other considerations should I think about when making this decision? Any particular recommendations? Budget is around 1K USD.

around 1k id be looking at (incl sale/secondhand) lemaire, wythe, de bonne facture, kaptain sunshine, document, our legacy
for something a little more fun dries van noten, jil sander, maybe acne
there are tons and tons and tons and tons available for way less secondhand tho
Thanks the suggestions, I’ll check them out
also check out seh kelly‘s balmacaans
coltesse is dropping a black coat on thursday
I was just looking at sehkelly. I like their marketing / explanations at least! Cool site
Spier and Mackay has some good outerwear - usually 500-600 for their polos/ulsters/balmacaans, but perhaps slightly less nice than other brands. Their stuff this season has been a little more boring than last, imo
I took a look at their Balmacaan and actually ordered one since I’m Canadian. I’d like to test the fit
I like the SEH one but im worried vat and customs are going to be excessive
And i think all this looking is helping me lean towards a balmacaan or otherwise loose silhouette compare to a polo coat
Spier tends to be slimmer with their coats from my experience but haven’t tried the balmacaan
Bal is easier to go with both casual and more formal. Dressing a polo coat down is trickier and the classic camel colour isn’t as versatile as a brown or grey Balmacaan
That makes total sense
