Question for the chat... I think i have a potential J2 where I'd have tons of autonomy. There really isn't a structure defined so it doesn't seem to be extremely meeting heavy (outside of training). However, they used the same consulting firm as my J1 to build out their organization.
The firm is still there at J2 and J2 would want me to get as much knowledge as possible from the consultants so they can kick them out and bring them in on a case-by-case basis. This realistically would take months as I learn the system.
I've never met anyone from the firm at J1 and they are no longer at J1. I think my first couple of weeks would be spent just learning as much as possible from the consultants, and I've been told that I can schedule time from them (obv i would make it work with my schedule) to learn. Is taking J2 worth the risk considering the consultants essentially built the software I administer at J1?

How confident/stable are you in your current savings/ability to start from scratch if both blow up ?
I'm not stable right now
My first thoughts are to research who exactly was involved in the implementation at J1 and see if they mention anything about their work at J2.. either through marketing material, linkedin, etc...

Guess there's two philosophies: not stable so OE is even more incentivized or not stable -> preservation/risk reduction mode.
Think its mainly personal at that point. If it's going to stress you out or put J1 work quality at risk if you're trying to stabilize.
Is it a large firm (McKinsey, PwC, etc)? Might reduce the risk but if its a small firm your name/face will be much more known
Smaller firm bettween 500-1000 employees

Hmm, seems tricky.
With what's known I'd lean towards it making more sense to do it than not, esp even if we roleplay that you get 2 checks for 6 months -> get caught if that money can help you stabilize
unless you currently have momentum to stabilize now and will be in a better spot (less stress/risk tolerance) in the next few months.
J1 pays 100k and that's enough to avoid bankruptcy. Will probably risk it considering the perceived autonomy

However, they used the same consulting firm as my J1 to build out their organization. This sentence by itself isn't a big flag though Can you encourage using nicknames as best as you can? "I usually don't go by Ben, but Benjamin". "My last name is often too hard to pronounce to other devs, can we shorten it to G.?"
My name is essentially john smith but i'll give them a nick name
I'd be stable within 6 months. Staying with a friend right now.. rent is $700.

If you’ve never interacted with these consultants at J1 and don’t think you ever will then this would be within my personal risk tolerance. It’s possible that someone at J1 will tell a story to the consultants about that guy OOO but it’s pretty unlikely. People talk about us a lot less than we think they do.
