Buyee USD currency conversion

I live in the US and am planning to buy something via Buyee from a Yahoo Japan auction for the first time. I noticed the Yen-to-USD currency conversion on Buyee is notably different than what PayPal's and Google's currency conversion says. Does anyone know why that is? And if I win the auction, would I pay in Yen (which would use PayPal's conversion)? Or USD using Buyee's conversion?

They charge a markup on currency conversion. Pay with whatever method favours you. PayPal offers additional purchase protection tho.

i’d personally opt for paypal for the added protection even if the exchange rate is slightly less favourable

The PayPal rate is actually much better than Buyee's. Would I pay in Yen via PayPal? Or would Buyee force a USD conversion?

i used paypal for a fromjapan transaction and it handled it all for me, was still better than buyee's conversion rate

If anyone else has recommendations on what to do for a Yahoo Japan auction, please let me know. It's my first time!

This might not apply here, but if you buy in Yen with a credit card, then you'll want to make sure it's a credit card with no foreign transaction fee. If it doesn't have those fees, then that might actually be the best rate compared to the payment provider rates. Otherwise, that extra 3% charge or so will eat up any difference.

Since I'm making the bid now with no checkout page, I'm not sure whether I'll have to pay in Yen or in the Buyee-converted USD if I win the auction
