what happened to image() for css?

I was watching videos on background image stuff, and found Kevin's videoabout image() for CSS and how he was excited about it, and he noted that it didn't have browser support yet, and it's been almost 2 years now so I figured it did by now, but I went and checked and it still has 0%, and I can't find any info on what happened, was it ignored cause there was a better solution or deemed unnecessary or not useful enough, what happened and why was it never adopted?

image() still hasn't picked up any support from browser vendors yet (still not even a test implementation). It's being proposed for Interop again this year though so maybe they will take a closer look at it: https://github.com/web-platform-tests/interop/issues/744 @Ringmaster500 please do give the OP of the interop issue a thumbs up to show the vendors there is interest.

Ah ok sounds great, I've just done that, glad to see it's being given another look with a possible chance of adoption still

is there anything in particular from image() that you're looking forward to?
