Crashing when launching or playing a game
PC is crashing when launching or playing a game
Intially the screen will go black no audio or input. USB peripherals will disconnect, and eventually the PC will reboot itself. normal tasks are able to complete fine this is only when playing a game.
Hardware:
7600x Ryzen CPU
7800xt xfx graphics card
NZXT B650E mobo on latest bios
Corsair 750x PSU (Bought it in 2018 so it is older but seems to be working still to my knowledge at least)
64GB of Crucial Micron Pro RAM @5600MHz
I am asking anyone that can or is willing to help me troubleshoot as I have tried everything that I know to try. I am lost on anymore ideas and am looking to see if there is something that I missed in logs or troubleshooting.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am adding the link to the memtest since I am back and starting to get a usb ready so that I can verify memory
these sound scary to me lmao

Yeah its weird..I will add that I am seeing this on a new install as well
I recently tried reinstalling and I am seeing those exact same logs in this install too
as in, completely fresh and no modifications? 👀
those are your
journalctl -b -1 -e -k
logs?journalctl -b -1 -p err
I believe
the kernel logs are showing errors relating to my usb hubs that I have connected to the PC
they resolve themselves, at least I think they do since they are functioning until the crash which is when they disconnectoh wait, why are you on bazzite-deck
I was wanting to have the game mode
huh. Idk enough about bazzite to know if bazzite-deck is supported on desktop tbh
I think it is since
out of curiosity, if you're re-installing anyways, can you try the AMD version from the website's dropdown?
could be
Oh I am
So the drop down I am selecting everything that relates, just when I select the steam game mode is when it shifts to the bazzite deck image
but this happens in the desktop mode and the game mode (SteamOS Frontend), so I think that this will happen with the desktop image too
oh facinating, I didn't get the Steam Gaming mode option XD maybe my hardware just doesn't support it lmao
ok, so its not that then
lol I was on Nobara before bazzite and I was running the game mode there too, the main thing that I think will make it incompatible is Nvidia but I could be very wrong
nah, I'm AMD too, so idk what makes the diff
🤷♂️
I am not able to build the memtest.
No ld command found. but every package that I have tried to install seems to already have the package
I am going to try to build it on my mac to see if results differ
Managed to get the memtest to go and I got it running now
the best thing to do is run memtest by booting it
and not building it yourself
That is what I did
I booted into it after getting an img
Just an fyi I checked temps earlier when I got back. The pc was idling for about an hour so and all temps were below 42C
CPU was at 41C
GPU was at 40C
And GPU mem was at 58C
noice
Gpu mem was the only outlier
Got through address mode with 100% passing
Currently at 50% through the block tests
I don’t think it’s the memory since the test was repeating 3 other times and it passed the first time
Just curious, have you tried the gnome version?
No I haven’t
I'm wondering if we're looking at a Bazzite bug, a KDE bug, or a mesa bug
If it's Bazzite or mesa, it'll most likely happen in gnome. If it's KDE, it'll not happen
Can you get a pastebin of
journalctl -k
?
It'll include kernel errorsI just tested again to see if I could find something in logs...I have this stack trace so...progress?
These are the logs after the stack trace:
The dump is from gamescope wayland...I wonder if these are similar to the kwin bug that I saw on here earlier
but I would think that it would say kwin so I could be just speculating here.
I just tried without gamescope and it crashed again so I don’t think that’s it
it would be helpful to have the entire log. Can you boot, cause nothing but the crash, then do
journalctl -b -1 -k
then put the log into a pastebin? https://pastebin.comPastebin
Pastebin.com - #1 paste tool since 2002!

Yeah sure thing will do after I get off this afternoon
Just got home and at the puter. Should have some logs here in a sec
Just crashed and it’s now rebooting
Pastebin
journalctl logs 20240916 - Pastebin.com
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
weird, I don't really see any errors in there
Same
I am glad I am not the only one
So I guess its not hardware?
I've gott literally no idea 😅 sorry
Thank you for your help though!
I have been dealing with this for about 3 weeks now and I am just glad someone offered their time
for sure 👍 its weird tho that the last thing in the kernel logs is just that your mouse connected
Yeah it seems some of the stuff is from the boot up into the next session after the crash
since some services are starting
shouldn't be tho, you definately did the
-b -1
thing, yeah? The times seem to line upyeah I did the -b -1 -k flags
the
-b -1
tells journalctl to load up the previous boot's logsyep
-k
is for kernel messages
so like
i don't understand why it just kind of cuts off like thatI dont know either and it honestly is frustrating. I just want to play diablo with friends since this is computer with my discord setup
I will note that this WAS happening on another desktop that I have....I thought it was related to the controllers that were being connected (At the time it was connected to a DualSense controller)
oh btw, did you try the Gnome version?
I started connecting the Xbox controller to launch and then switch and it stopped doing it from then on
Oh no I havent
Let me check something before rebasing
without any errors in journalctl, idk what else to do besides just try a different DE lmao
lmao fair
I should just have to rebase right?
or am I needing to install the os again?
I suppose? Straight up, I tried bazzite for the first time less than a week ago lmao but I know what stuff people wanted me to try with my issue, so I'm parroting now XD
i think rebasing should work yeah, though I think the dotfiles in your home directory expect KDE, so you might have some stuff not work, idk
This is a fresh install since I nuked my last one since I was thinking it could be a bad install or something
so I have nothing on this drive outside of my browser and discord
i mean if you're not worried about things breaking, might as well try just a rebase haha and if things still don't work, try a reinstall
I might try not doing a game-mode one too just in case there's something weird going on there, but honestly idk what any of those actually have that are different from one another
basicaly just spit-ballin here at this point XD
All good man. I dont think that would be an issue since they are two separate DEs so to speak
at least according to my understanding
I could be wrong myself
gnome and KDE? yeah for sure. I think the only stuff that would break is like maybe theming or something
as I understand it, when you install oneor the other, the /home/ directory's ~/.config directory has some stuff pertaining to either Gnome or KDE, so rebasing might mess some of that up since a rebase doesn't touch your home dir
as for game-mode, no clue

Rebasing on Bazzite
This is the old documentation, please view the new documentation. ] What is Rebasing? Attention: Do not rebase between different desktop environments. Rebasing allows users to switch to a different image without having to reinstall and lose personal files and application data. It is recommended to use the Bazzite Rollback Helper utility. ...
Switching desktop is the first thing mentioned...not supported lmao
Attention: Do not rebase between different desktop environments.ah, so maybe not then XD
lol
thing is the HTPC that was doing this before is identical to this one minus some of the hardware
I was really glad gamescope fixed my issue, because I was not looking forward to havingg to reinstall
The game-mode I think is all gamescope
its handled by the steam client
I could be wrong but that is how I think it works...
yeah beats me XD
I know game mode isn't supported on my hardware, but gamescope works just fine
maybe game mode is kind of a SteamOS-looking thing? to make it look a bit more like a console
yeah that is what it is but it has some other added features brought over from the holo iso
that looks dope as hell
^^ yeah that the game mode
it's like a better big-picture-mode?
pretty much
but you get addons through plugins too
so you can change the look or add certain features
niiiiiiice
can't imagine that's causingg your issues, but couldn't hurt to check anyways tbh
I tried in kde too and its the same issue
oh like regular non game-mode kde?
@CyberZombySquid since it's game specific
you own it on steam?
I tried in KDE with and without gamescope on and the game mode. I also tried a bunch of launch commands from proton db
Yepper
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
as a launch option
launch it, crash it, log gets made in your home dirOk will try that
I am uploading the log to the github issue
Its too large to upload but I just went through it and this is what I got out of it
The only error was this one:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/run/host/usr/lib/extest/libextest.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.
BUT I did see this not sure if this could be something?

176.028:00d4:00d8:err:xrandr:xrandr14_get_adapters Failed to get adaptersNone of those are errors
I need the full log
Let me see if I can upload to drive or something and share the link
pastebin is good for these
just as a temp thing, you can do
cat <file> | fpaste
that link only lasts 24 hours tho
really wish there was a way to fpaste
for longer than that for debug purposesIll do pastebin...though the file is 35MB
too large for pastebin lmao
it's text, try zipping it
should be tiny
omg I feel so dumb.
if it drops below 25mb I think you can just upload to discord directly too actually
lmao didnt even think to archive it
for some reason discord wont let me upload 😐 shared it on github

here's someone else with your exact same issue
Sorry for the late response - ext4 I believe
let me verify
Not the issue then
Check the thread, there may be a fix for your problem there
First I've seen this so they are best equipped to help you there
ahhh I think I see a potential solution...one sec lemme try
Yeah I think I know what the issue is
Or was
I think it was a combo of some power cable extensions and I think those were messed up because of a loose power connector on the gpu. I’m going to retry in the morning to verify if they still work but I was able to play Diablo for 30 minutes which is the longest time on this desktop
I feel so silly
Man don't feel that bad, I had a bad riser cable on an old rig
Impossible to tell it was broken, so I just had random BSODs for a good 6 months until I figured out what it was
Computers fucking suck
daaang, down to the hardware! Glad you figured it out! 😄
Thanks! For the help from both of yall I’m going to test it more today to verify that it is indeed fixed
I love tech but I always tell my wife that my next venture is going to be barber or carpenter
Goose farmer
They’ll all be silly too lmao
