Dressing well for my first time talking to a girl I like?
So, there's this girl in my uni class. I've been working up the courage to approach her for a few days now but I'm self conscious about my appearance. I'm a big dude, 6'1 270 lbs, former fit now chunky but not roly poly type fat. But since weight loss isn't a quick fix I'm trying to make up for that in other categories, mostly grooming and clothes.
I have some nice clothes but I feel like a lot of them aren't exactly flattering or don't feel like something that would stick out to a girl necessarily. I wanna dress better then average but not in a tryhard way, more like I've shown that I care about how I look and put in effort. I'm on a budget so I usually get my clothes from Hudson's Bay or H&M. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have three layers of answer
1- Don't worry too much about your clothes, attitude is more important. Wear what you feel good in, if that means buying something new because you feel confident, sure, but don't feel like you have to
2- Usually advice on what to wear requires some effort on your part... what sort of things do you like? Its a very open question and open response
3- Uniqlo
I like comfort without sacrificing looking well dressed
something I can wear to class but also when I wanna..talk to someone that's worth dressing nicely for?

forgive the absolutely horrible quality. This is just my general average self in my home clothes
as you can see I'm chunky but its weirdly distributed. I have skinny legs and arms
alright, so are you feeling like the shirt and the sweats are too lowkey for what you want?

I usually wear cotton tees
I have a few collared shirts too somewhere
for me a nice simple sweater is a similar vibe as a t shirt but can present nicer

tbh the trouble is "standing out" could mean many things. For instance, check out some of Bills photos, he stands out but maybe not in the way you mean? This is why we recommend finding photos which stick out to you

As many have said here it’s hard to be prescriptive about what you should be buying without knowing the vibe you’re going for however i think there’s something to be said for starting with a really good pair if blue jeans with a crisp white shirt(tee or buttoned) , it’s a foundation that you can build almost anything off of
totaly agree with this, when i was first branching out from wearing prettymuch nothing but slim fit black pants and black tees i bought some nice jeans and white tee and tbh its classic and always looks good. while still being neutral enough that if your like me and not as comfortable with your style it doesn't feel like "doing too much"

in the photo you linked, I like the general casual vibe. Things I think contribute-
loose shirt and pants
the shirt hem looks to be in a good place, not too long
vertical stripes of the shirt add a nice element in combination with the looseness
the open collar seems natural
wrinkles on the pants are :chefskiss:
taper of the pants seems cool here
yellow socks add a bit of color contrast, very effective
the loafers define the "casual/formal" level nicely, imagine this with different shoes
idk if you agree with any of these or see something else, but if you do, maybe thats a specific point you could build off of for yourself

The reason i say this is because shorter jackets accentuate the waist:shoulder ratio whereas longer jackets and shirts can appear rectangular unless dialled in perfectly

I'd recommend staying away from sweatpants or any athletic joggers if you're tryna rizz a lady up, get some wrangler jeans, you'd rock the Americana look well, you got the build for it
