Serious boot problems with windows and bazzite dual boot
Hey,
This is a long story, but to keep it short, my pc can't boot into windows after a crash in bazzite that froze my pc entirely and forced me to hard restart it
After that crash windows did it's usual "Check Disk for problems", it was stuck on 100% for a couple of hours
I had to restart it again, and now it's stuck on "Diagnosing your pc" state, and by stuck I mean I gave it 12 hours to finish it's "Diagnosis", and it did nothing.
At that point I couldn't boot into windows, which is serious in itself since I haven't finished migrating into bazzite and I had some work left there
Then I tried booting into bazzite, and at start I couldn't even do that, I got a blank screen and couldn't even revert to previous state
Seems like only ostree 0 worked, and the usual issues I had were just happening a lot frequently (main reason why it took me so long to migrate)
These include:
- Gnome crashing and freezing without any way for me to use my mouse/keyboard/open any app
- Screen/apps glitching when opening apps like steam or discord
- Computer restarting without any notification/warning, just like a hard restart
- Apps just crashing, EasyEffects/Spotify/Bottles
It is weird to see the problems happening less often when I'm using one screen with 100% scaling and without the bluetooth adapter. But I'm still encountering these and numerous other issues pretty frequently
TLDR: I just want my windows installation that is installed on my other samsung 980 pro to work, and potentially if I have to I'll disable the disk scanning it does, because that happens every time I boot to bazzite (didn't happen on fedora tho)
And I want the bazzite installation that is installed on my samsung 870 QVO to not break anything on my other drive, people say it has to do with my 4070 Ti Gaming OC that I'm using, but I have the latest 560 nvidia drivers so I shouldn't face that many problems with this I think
Would appreciate any help!

did you run RAM and smart checks?
I would've if I had access to windows utilities, can you guide me over how I can check my hardware for any problems like what you mentioned? could also be the drive even though I can access it
you said you have 2 drives
Yes
do you mount the ntfs drive in linux?
Nope but I can mount it
you cant run memory tests in win
https://www.memtest.org you need a usb drive with this
Memtest86+
Memtest86+ | The Open-Source Memory Testing Tool
Memtest86+ is an advanced, free, open-source, stand-alone memory tester for 32- and 64-bit computers (UEFI & BIOS supported)
you can use ventoy
stop using your computer until you test your ram
So I need to install this into a flash drive
boot into it through the bios and let it run the tests?
yes
On it
only do halfway you dont need 100%
if the ram has failed you will know soon enough
can you help me debug, for some reason after installing the utility to a flash drive using ventoy bios doesn't detect it
installing?
ventoy?
flash ventoy with its exe
then stick memtest in it
or skip ventoy
Trying it again
Okay you're right
I need some help, I have 7 failing addresses with some hex value "expected" and some other hex on "found"
I'm trying to understand what I'm reading but long story short it says status failed
so the test failed?
yup
is your ram removable?
Yeah I have a desktop pc, it is a relatively new ddr4 corrair vengance ram though which is why it's weird
happens
try removing one stick to see which failed
then RMA it and live with half of the ram
keep running the tests after every ram I remove?
you need to find which stick faile
d
i would suggest you reinstall both OSs after that and backup your data
really did not want to reinstall windows since I had a ton of configurations I had done there
it could be you didnt plug them correctly or something dumb
well, its always up to you
but I would consider both installations corrupted
I'll chec the rams, but I want to also understand better, it tests the ram for connectivity?
it tests whether the ram works correctly
and yours doesnt
ram has a lifetime warranty
lifetime longer than 1 year tho, right?
foreverer
well "what is reasonable" which is more than 5 years in most cases
Yeah mine is 1 year max
4 sticks of 16
overkill a bit but it was for casess like this I guess
straight from corsairs website
I see, so anyways, I'll remove each ram module and redo the test up until 25% is fine?
since it's 34% and I believe we got the results
uh no since your ram failed now youll have to do up to 70-80% if you want to be safe
well actually
100%
after you found the failed module
otherwise youll corrupt your data again
So update, pulled them out one by one and now I have 2 working rams and 2 failed ramd
The working rams at 50% and seem okay
leave it to go to 100%
The failed ones I saw they failed at 30% so I stopped the check and removed them
Okay
then RMA the 2 fail sticks
Okay so I found 2 non working ram sticks, now I'm left with 2 working ones that I ran the memtest and it succeded
Anything else I could check since windows still doesn't boot
Bazzite I'll test during the day if it's better
I told you you'll need to reinstall everything
When you booted windows with that broken ram stick you corrupted windows
So I'm in the process of doing that but it's getting really difficult
I have one really annoying problem on bazzite, at times display just freezes yet inputs still work, that is I can still type/play or pause and it'll work just fine
I always have to disconnect one monitor for it to continue working, sometimes, and the other times it'll just not respond, I'm using a nvidia gpu with 560 drivers, do you know why?
For context, now I just opened another instance of the zen browser and it started happening every 1 minute
Also, OneDrive seems to not be accessible on my mounted ntfs drive, here's a screenshot for context

Hey, thanks for responding! I did check, i do have those options in /lib/modprobe.d/50-nvidia-default.conf Should i delete the whole file, or just the fbdev part? Or leave the file, and delete the contents? What do those options do anyway? EDIT: I also have dual monitors, if that’s relevant.
