deck Install Support Question
Hello! I am having trouble installing from an SD card or USB drive. It looks like I am not the only one from the support pages I have seen. The boot menu does not display SD cards or USB drives after trying several.
As such I am thinking it may be an option for me to flash the Bazzite live CD onto a 2TB SSD directly, then load the entire live CD into the deck's RAM, and install the desktop onto that same SSD(which would be doable if things are cached in RAM).
Can someone help me understand what grub or launch flags to use here or if this is unfeasable?

how are you creating the install media?
sudo dd if=/var/home/kecj/Downloads/bazzite-deck-stable.iso of=/dev/sdb
I suggest trying something else like Ventoy, Fedora Media Writer or Balena Etcher
I had no success and it looks like others had similar issues https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1599cvn/has_anyone_tried_bootingrecovering_steamos_from_a/
SteamOS doesn't boot from Ventoy
Bazzite boots from Ventoy
Heard; will proceed as advised then and report back.
I can confirm this because I reinstalled Bazzite on my Deck + PC yesterday with Ventoy
Will continue reporting in a few minutes.
@termdisc (Deck+PC) I've only just gotten to grub and currently have my 64GB SSD in. It's working great! I am swapping in my 2TB SSD now and attempting to install.
Will update.
It's looking great!!
great!
If I encrypt boot medium on install am I easily capable of entering pass code on steam deck? Or do I need external keyboard?
I can't confidently answer that because I don't do encrypted boot
No problem you have been phenomenal in your support. Install still pending but it appears to be going well.
you need an external keyboard
however, there is a ujust command to do TPM unlock
which will automatically unlock your luks via TPM
then you rely on the Steam pin to keep it secure
Means the drive is a brick if removed from the deck, and you're still protected by that pin if the device is stolen
