What is the best way to host a server for 2 players that are physically very far from each other?
I want to host a small server (2-3 players) to play modded Minecraft (medium-sized forge/fabric modpacks, around 120-250 mods) with my younger brother. I had been port-forwarding to play with him when we were still in the same country. However, as the title stated, we are now approx. 13000km from each other, so I don't really know which is the right way to do it. I would be appreciated if anyone can help me with this. Thank you.

your best option is to get a server thats located in the middle between where you and ur brother is located
idk what countries you are both currently in and im assuming a different country based on the distance
i don't really know much about hosting services/providers so could you give me some money-to-performance suggestions?
thats more a #marketplace question
oh sorry i should have mentioned it. i am currently in canada, and my brother is in vietnam
where are you located?
ahhh, thats gunna make it hard
use something like https://wondernetwork.com/pings
WonderNetwork
Global Ping Statistics - WonderNetwork
WonderNetwork operates a global network of servers and leverages them to provide network testing solutions. View ping times between WonderNetwork servers.
add your closest city and their closest city, see what the ms is and report back
id do this myself just to get an idea but like canada and vietnam are big places
um so the closest city to mine is minneapolis in US (since the city i am in is in the middle of nowhere) and the closest to him is hanoi
the ping from minneapolis-hanoi is 247.459ms according to the website
yeah getting some form of host between the two countries is best then
then you both will get around 125ms which is still very playable
250+ is just not fun to play on
yes ... being unable to chop a tree is just not fun at all
so, i should mark my question with answered and make another question regarding hosting services/providers in /marketplace right?
trying to split your ping like this isnt gunna be fun or really possible
like your best options are probs either finding a hosting provider in either japan or east coast usa
Yep!
sucks that the earth's landmasses have massive splits between them like this
😢
Sucks there's a limit to the speed of light
yeah, the universe needs its speed of light config.yml changing lol
or we need to find a way to get around the speed of light
300000000m/s just isn't fast enough, Admins need to double it
wait ... doesn't it mean that humans will age faster? since the slower you move in space-axis, the faster you move in time-axis
shifting dimensions is really the only option
No, because it's relative.
but the chances of that happening outside of science fiction is like nahh
You'd be moving faster through time compared to light at 300 million m/s, but not compared to other people in the hypothetical 600 million m/s world.
Wait no
Hmmmm
Damn that's a good question
My brain is exploding trying to wrap itself around this concept
Wait no
If speed of light increased that would have no effect on the way YOU perceive time
I think
Because you’d be moving the same speed
Because the flow through the time axis is limited by the speed of light, if the speed of light is doubled the universal rate of time is halved?
My brain hurts
If the speed of light doubled, it wouldn't change how humans age biologically in normal conditions, but it would change the way time dilation works. Thus, in contexts where relativistic effects are significant, such as high-speed travel or strong gravitational fields, the difference in aging due to time dilation would be less than with our current understanding of physics.
According to ChatGPT
i can bearly understand english at the moment

anw, i should close this question now before it's going way off-topic. thank you for your help Maven. it's also nice talking with both of you, Señor Leche and Torrent

probably LA would be one of the better options
you can also get hosting in Japan or Singapore, but I'm unsure how well routing works for those countries
Well, moving through time faster means you move through space slower, it’s why conversely photons don’t experience time.
If C was doubled in a universe model I’m reasonably sure it’d break physics completely. The Higgs field would need to allow a way higher lightspeed which in turn plays havoc with stuff like black holes and quantum physics.
If false vacuum decay is real then it could end up destroying reality.
One thing I can tell you is physics fails after you get to a certain speed.
yeah i just checked and LA-Hanoi ping is much lower (204.804ms). i wonder why, since physically Minneapolis is closer to mine, while LA is just so so far
Actually yeah electromagnetism would be different due to electrons having a higher speed cap and that’d play with the weak and strong atomic forces, fuck really knows what happens but it’s either ‘mostly nothing’ or ‘completely shattered physics’.
unfortunately servers don't just float in the middle of the ocean
just all traffic to NA from vietnam will likely go thru california
so it's best to have the server there
singapore and japan are both more expensive and somewhat out of the way
and everywhere else isn't that reliable when it comes to internet
so it means that something like time-travelling, which is travelling faster than light to go through time-dimension in negative speed in the time-axis, isn't possible at all
here's a map of underwater cables fiber cables if you're interested btw

ahh yeah it makes sense. wish my profs had taught me this in computer networking
Well yeah that’s just a fundamental property of existing in a reality where the Higgs field is a thing.
FTL through brute force requires infinite energy.
from most places in the world you can get ~200ms to LA. Not amazing but better than what it could be
that looks very very impressive. i imagined that there are a lot of underwater cables, but not that much
just remember that there's thousands of cables inside of each "cable" sometimes
and each (fiber optic) cable has multiple of fibers too ... wow that's a lot
lemme just increase the tickrate
