the pros of using puffer/paper is reliability, stability and maintainability, which is what one of the biggest con of the random forks. somethings might just not work, there might be incompatibilities. There might be bugs that are slow to update. as paper/pufferfish update those fixes usually take a while for them to appear on their forks. etc the pros of these unstable forks are they tend to showcase some bleeding edge new optimization. Which sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. Think of it like an alpha build. Could it be great? yeah. could it cause issues? yeah. For production servers you typically avoid alpha builds of anything, and only resort to them if u have to.

fair enough ive recently switched over to trying out some axolotle and honestly its making the server really well, its handeling more players than we first were able to

Kind of how i see it, is if pufferfish just isnt working for u, then u can start looking at other options, but should focus on fixing the performance issues elsewhere. (ie. replacing unoptimized plugins, pregen, etc)

fair enough in that sence

yeah, the forks arent bad. they can just cause issues. So if you have a team ready to fix them if they come to be, then go for it issues could be: data corruption, lag elsewhere, incompatibility with plugins, etc

tbf we havn't had any issues so far, it was mainly from our own custom plugins causing a server loop Ive met a lot of people who shit on people who mention axolotl or forks like that

iirc axolotl had a backdoor in it in previous vers Realistically, most servers don't need custom paid server softwares Pufferfish + Good hardware & server optimisation usually does the trick however if you get to the point where you do need more perf, you should honestly check out the likes of UniverseSpigot ($70 one time, miles better than axolotl) and, don't use Pufferfish+. It's only really for people who use their host.

uhh I dont think axo has a backdoor also PF+ is a great option if you are on PF host they have good hardware and it comes with pf+ so you get the extra perf
