How often to dry clean Todd Snyder Riviera Sweater Polo?

Hi. I have this popular polo that’s 55% silk 45% cotton (dry clean or hand wash only). I’ve worn it maybe 8-10 times throughout the year and haven’t washed it. It has no stains and does not smell. I wear it with an undershirt and hang it afterwards. But I was wondering when I should dry clean it? Since I heard dry cleaning clothing too often can be bad for it.

if you plan to put it away for cool weather i'd wash it beforehand otherwise it's largely up to when it gets dirty, social pressure and/or personal preference, whichever happens first

Do I need a special soap? Or is unscented bar soap good enough?

use a detergent, something gentle, and cool/room temp water. bar soap will leave residue. I fill a large pot with water and a small amount of detergent and white vinegar. Throw in the garment(s), agitate for a minute, soak for 10, agitate for another 2-5, and then rinse it out and hang or lay flat to dry. Don't twist, scrunch, squeeze, or wring out the garment(s).

Thanks. Since its not wool, I’ll just do that

I would get a detergent that is labeled safe for silk. Common detergents have enzymes that can break down animal fibers. I’m not sure how major the effect is, but why risk it if it’s an item you care about

If it does begin to smell, and you don’t want to wash it, mix vodka and water in a 2:1 ratio in a spray bottle and spray down the garment. The vodka will kill any odor causing bacteria and will dry without leaving an odor of its own.
