because once the letter reaches its position as in the given word, it can not be repeated. We usually find the rank by progressing from the first letter (when the word is kept in alphabetical sequence) to the (word given in the question, in this case it is VARUN) . Once a letter reaches the position it assumes in the given word (in this case once we get V in the first position we move onto the second positon and when going aphabetically we place A and coincidently it is also the Second letter of the given word and then we move on to the 3rd positon and so on). We gradually proceed towards the given word, so there is no repetition. (well in this case there is no repetition) In other cases like APPLE. There is repetition of P in the word itself so we can repeat it once again while proceeding. I hope you understand..

the letters in the word are placed in such a manner that you rearrange them, and place every possible word in an alphabetical order, you get the dictionary list of all words possible using these specific characters (may or may not be an actual word) finding the rank of a word is basically like finding the roll number of a specific person in your class if your class roll numbers were arranged in an alphabetical order
