Random black screen when gaming
Hi,
My games seem to go to a black screen randomly when playing (I think it happens when playing on battery) on my ROG Ally X. The RGB lights and fans stay on but sound also cuts off.
I tried using journalctl and the only thing that popped up around that time was a pipewire warning:
pipewire[848]: 0x55aa04257540: out of buffers on port 0 2`
Any idea on what could be causing this? It didn't happen on Windows.

I noticed that after resuming from suspend, my temperatures go over 95% until I go to apply the fan curves again so it may actually be overheating…it’s like the HHD loses settings after resume
@antheas is the hhd dev, perhaps he has an idea on what's happening here
loses the fan curve after resume?
sounds like the asus I know
i will try to fix over the following days and ping you to test it out
Yes, I replicated it by using the premade Turbo profile, suspending and resuming and my temps spike to 95 degrees. Then I go to HHD move one of the fans one notch and temps go down again.
If I use the “Custom” TDP option it seems this issue doesn’t occur.
try
ujust _hhd-dev
which will apply the fix until you reboot
should be fixedYep now when resuming it applies the correct fan curve after like a second 🙂
Thanks a lot!
it will get pushed to bazzite in a few days
will be adjustor ver 3.4.5
Perfect, I will mark this as resolved

Thank you
Hello, sorry to comment on this but I'm facing the exact same black screen issue, but I don't know if it's also due to temps, there's nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can see and it happens randomly
Update
That's the thing, this wasn't happening until I updated today
What's your version
In the System tab it says version 40, is this the correct one?
@Kyle Gospo where's the version now in steamui
If it helps, the rpm-ostree status version is: 40.20240822
How's your black screen? Does your black screen totally shuts of the lights of the LCD?
It just completely shuts off the screen panel, audio and input, and it becomes 100% unresponsive to anything. Only the fans and RBG lights stay on, I have to hold the power button to force shut the device
Although I haven't had any black screen crashes in a couple days, I'm not sure if it's fixed now or I'm just getting lucky
That's the same thing I have experienced a while ago after a week of usage. I've been playing Elden ring for maybe 2-3 hours and it shuts off leaving the joystick rgb lights on and the top one near the usb c port. No responses at all.
it's the first time for me.
I did some digging to this and I discovered it's potentially a widespread issue to all the ROG Ally X devices

Saw that too, saw someone who has his device replaced and it's the same.
It's not exclusive to Windows or Bazzite, it happens to both
Do you have only Bazzite installed or dual boot?
If that is the case, returning it won't solve the issue.
Dual boot. But my windows partition is not being booted at all because I mainly use bazzite.
Do you have BIOS and MCU firmware up-to-date?
Because it's weird I haven't had a single black screen crash in days
Saw a thread from OG Ally too in the past. Well let's hope ASUS make somesort of firmware update to increase any threshold related to triggering that event.
All updated, for me it's weird why it happened after more or less week of no kind of shit.
I can say that what potentially stopped triggering the crashes for me was to stop using sleep mode
I just shutdown the device everytime I noticed it entering sleep mode, and I stopped getting crashes ever since
Returning the device won't solve the issuem
The only thing I'm seeing is some sort of update for the firmware that can fix the issuem
I'm sure ASUS is aware by now.
MCU firmware 312 was released very recently
Maybe that's why I haven't gotten any crashes
Well that happened to me even while on MCU 312
it can't be the MCU because antheas told me that MCU is just related to gamepad/controller thing if I'm not mistaken
Hmmm
It's weird then how I haven't had a crash in a while
I hope it's not just luck
Because honestly ASUS track record with the OG Ally and the SD card issue doesn't give me much hope
Saw a youtuber talking about it too so any how this is not just luck.
Really hoping for a bios/firmware update. I saw a thread again saying he returned his ally x for the 3rd time and it has it too. lmaom
Atleast for me it just happened once today after a week of usage. 🤷
Yeah honestly it's very unlikely it's a hardware issue
It's so specific and inconsistent
Yeah I don't want to have a replaceent device that has the same thing lmao.
its just a hassle.
Well yeah it's no use returning it considering the facts
@Kisen Let's ask Kisen if it still happening on his/her side.
@KingSlendy Btw, what BIOS are you in?
I'm on BIOS 305 which is latest
Does your black screen crash has the LCD backlight on still? Like this one.
Also, since this date, you never got any crashes til now? What have you updated before this BIOS or MCU?
Not sure actually, I didn't pay attention to that
I think it has been more than a week without crashes for me
The only thing I did afaik was stopping to use sleep at all
But even if I started using sleep again the crashes haven't come back
Because if the LCD's still glowing, it might be a different issue from what is being posted on reddit with no backlights on.
If you updated your BIOS to 305 and you got no sudden black screen (Without backlit), it might have helped.
I updated to BIOS 305 before the black screen crashes occurred
Next time check if it has backlit.
This is really frustrating because there's so many new Ally X users who has this.
Would do, although I'd rather not experience any crashes again lol
Yeah the problem is that it's such a rare problem and nobody knows if it's tied to BIOS, firmware, drivers or hardware
Hoping for ASUS to put a changelog or changes on the next BIOS update.
Supposedly they're gonna release a BIOS update at the end of the month
Wait what does the last part mean?
That's for the sound crackling.
Does it mean they know it's a BIOS issue?
Pretty sure the crash happened to people on BIOS 304
Don't go back because I've experienced the black screen while on 304
I updated to 305 going 2 days now, still no crashes (yet)
How often did you experience the crashes?
2 times in a row, first time suddenly and 2nd time within an hour.
Then I updated to 305 and no black screen til now.
For me it was completely randomly only on one game, Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown. But it was pretty consistent, getting at least two crashes everyday. And ever since a few days ago I can play the game for hours with no crashes
But it was only on Bazzite
It was on Bazzite too.
I couldn't get a single crash on Windows
And I tried a lot
a single day or two might not be sufficient because it just started for me after a week from purchase.
Been using it daily and I even got to lvl 75 to Elden Ring before my first black screen started.
So far majority of those who got the black screen (again without lcd backlight glowing) are all on 304.
I've been playing a fair amount of Elden Ring too
And i haven't had a single crash on that game
Well let's hope for a bios/firmware update for this because it's pretty pointless if we'll get the same with the replacement device lmao.
Someone got 3-4 times of replacement since August and it still occured. (That's kinda mind torturing)
That's kinda insane tbh
