GPD Win, no/black internal display [is Hardware failure not software]:
My Win 4 died mid-game and hasn't shown anything on the screen since. I can connect a monitor and see it boot to gaming mode, and can access the terminal with Alt+Ctrl+F2/F4, but there's nothing but the backlight on the internal screen.
I've upgraded to latest, rebased to older versions in other posts, but I'm stuck.
Desktop mode the internal screen is the main, so can't do anything there, nor see mouse to try to use a monitor

Could you try booting a live iso and confirm it's not a hardware failure?
I'm on the 6800u win 4 and don't have this issue
yeah I cant see the BIOS
Pressed Fn+F7 on boot, zilch
Guess I have a shiny brick?
Could you not hook it up to an external monitor?
I am, still not seeing it
My immediate first reaction would be that it might be a hardware failure, since you can't even see the bios menu
If it was a bad SSD, you'd still be able to see the bios menu
my professional opinion is that the screen is toast
given that you see nothing on it
Alright, thanks I'll check out replacement screens
What's weird is that I'd expect video out to work
But yeah, some sort of hardware issue would be my guess
I'd like to at least remove and reseat it first-does it need to 100% discharged?
No idea on that, but if you want to 100% discharge, could you disconnect the battery + hold power to remove any residual charge?
mobo fried? you said that backlight worked?
i donβt know nearly enough about the GPD Win machines to tell you with certainty, but it does sound like some sort of hardware issue
Tbh I don't know either, maybe someone in the gpd discord or subreddit might have more info
Swapped a screen with another unit that at least shows the GPD logo, same behavior-just backlight works
Gonna swap back to ensure the screen still good but dang
Both screen still good π
Imma close this, but thanks for helping be find it's hardware
Mine tend to turn back on if power is held. Guess that's not normal?
how can it turn back on with a disconnected battery?
Oof I terribly misread
Just for completion, a video of what's not happening-blue unit.
Black unit has other issue from being off for a long time, but at least can access BIOS

woah, there's a blue version? that's nice
but yeah, that definitely doesn't look promising
Lol just a skin
I was advised to reset the BIOS by pressing the reset by the B button or go nuclear and factory reset
I'll backup saves and mods before either after work π
oh yeah, there is a bios reset via the little pinhole on the side. not sure if it'll help, but doesn't hurt to try
No luck, gonna backup my saves and try the reset, but if the reset screen can't appear on a monitor, I'm just gonna live with a non-portable device.
rip hardware failure
I got greedy, it was 4tb and "surely I'll sell the other one" :dispair:
well you have spare parts now? π
Would reseating the ssd be worth a shot, or just continue with a reset?
no idea tbh. i highly doubt it's the ssd, I was just trying to think of every possibility
Welp, the reset/recovery screen doesn't show on a monitor. I'm now afraid to guess where the buttons are, as I cant see the BIOS screen.
But, it's for parts now..so might as well do both and pray I don't fat finger it. Guess I'll learn how to swap the ssd after all π
I'll record for the next gal π
Blue never entered recovery mode, RIP
Swapped the ssd and seems ok, but I'll definetly check how to get an earlier battery warning to avoid this!
I forgot that I wiped the recovery when I installed Bazzite as I lost patience trying to dual boot
So there was no GPD recovery to access in the first place! ><
But learned plenty lol
