New College Student Looking to Change Style (Would Love Advice)

Hey everyone, I am entering college in a month or so and recently overhauled my clothing (all polyester/wicking athletic clothing) to some more casual stuff. I bought a lot from Abercrombie and Fitch, as well as their subpart Hollister, and am wondering what you all think. First time doing this, feel free to lmk any info I can give. Looking for general nice college clothing in a 4 season climate.

Here are some of the things I ordered, and the shoes I bought as well. Finally made the change to switch from literally only athletic wear haha.

For shoes. I plan on switching back and forth (would love to know when I should)

Got a pack of these shirts while also adding in another white and a blue shirt. I am keeping some of my old ones for when I workout. I added in a navy and cream colored sweatshirt as a light and dark option.

Got these twill joggers as well as some chinos and I'm bringing my few set of jeans (blue and black). Hoping to mix with my shirts well

Got these shorts as well as a tan, black, and lighter brown coloring which I can do a lot in. More pictures can be provided, this is kind of a "one picture of each" type of clothing I bought.

I'm getting more confident in myself especially when these clothes arrive. I switched my glasses a bit ago from a black frame to a more modern clear one which fits quite well, and I'm even considering purcashing subtle jewelry. As of right now I'd love a few clothing recs to tie everything together or probably some advice on how to style. I can list out everything if need be again 🙂

Biggest piece of advice would be to slow down and figure out what you like before you buy anything else Peruse #waywt #inspiration instagram, Pinterest etc

There’s tons and tons of different directions you can take your style and you’ll save a lot of money in the short and long term if you can get a general idea of what direction you’re looking to go

While I could not agree more with Jawna, I think you chose pretty neutral colours so you will probably actually use these. Overall I would recommand you not to try to reach the "checklist wardrobe" I.e "now im done with buying clothes and can focus on something else". Somehow, your clothing is a reflection of your taste and so will be evolving through times. You should always be aware of how you perceive what you own, and how satisfied you are with how you are dressed on a daily basis. Also, in my experience buying bundles of a same piece with declination of colours is not a good idea because it kills variety and fun. You end up looking the same everyday with a small tonal variation. You are probably not having an infinite budget at that point in life which is fine - through thrifting you may find many great pieces of clothing for cheap. My personal opinion over what you displayed is that it may look like very sportswear - which is expected considering your age and your previous wardrobe. I would heavily recommend you to get a nice white shirt and a classic pale blue button down denim shirt. In order to look effortlessly smarter you should definitely get yourself a pair of dark brown suede chukkas as they match with pretty much everything (dark jeans, chinos ; I do not currently like dark shoes with light jeans as it is way more "fashion" than stylish IMO) when you do not feel like a sneaker is proper for the mood. Finally, look for functionality : If you regularly feel like you miss a piece for something specific (eg : I never know what to wear when it is raining), then it is time for some action. Wish you the best in life and in your studies. Have fun !

in addition to figuring out what you like about clothes via looking online, be reasonably open to what you encounter on-campus as well. you see a lot of new people and new things in college (i've sure you've heard), and you may find someone or something inspires you IRL as well

appreciate it you guys im still tying to find my style so im glad what I have is neutral and is a good stepping stone. I do have nicer dress shirts as well. Would you reccommend getting the chukkas even though I’m on a large campus and ill be walking a ton? Or should they be for more nicer events. Do you guys have any advice for styling clothing in terms of color pairing?

First I would advise you not to rush and feel the mood. If nobody around you is wearing any kind of "dressier" shoes and you don't feel like yourself in these at this point, don't buy them. You do not want to stick out too much with clothes some stranger told you would be nice on the Internet while you did not fully agree + have to socialize a lot which requires you to be true to yourself and to others. Your clothing must be synced with your spirit so you feel at home anywhere, kind of. I personally think dark brown suede chukkas are a must once you start searching for a more mature look because they are extremely comfortable (easy 5-7km/day walks with these if good quality), classy yet never "too much". They pair well with almost every colour (jeans, khakis, grey wool, beige pants...) so you will inevitably be glad to have them in your closet at some point in the decade to come, hence my recommendation.

I think you should get chukkas if you like chukkas. They aren't a necessity by any means tho, and you could v easily go your entire life never wearing or wanting them. Lotta footwear options out there. Give it some time, see how your style changes, and the decision will be easy to make because you'll either feel yourself saying "damn wish I had some chukkas" or "damn I hate chukkas"

agreed, speaking as a person who bought chukka boots then regretted it once i started wearing things that did not go with them
