Sizing Advice
Hi all! I’m pretty new to this whole male fashion thing, my whole wardrobe atm is super baggy jeans and oversized shirts and I want to change that.
Yesterday I went to a mall and some clothing stores like UNIQLO and J. Crew to try on chinos, shirts, sweaters etc. but I really don’t know where to start with sizing. I think medium shirts and sweaters fit me well but I’m stumped on chinos. I haven’t ever worn them and I’m not sure what is a “correct(?)” fit as again I just wear oversized jeans. I tried on a bunch of chinos and have some pictures attached to hopefully get some feedback on.
The khaki chinos I tried on were 29/32, and I think the black and white ones were both 30/32, one of them might have been 31/32. I should’ve noted this down. I was thinking of going up to 31 or maybe even 32, as they fit well? maybe? Again I’m not sure what to feel for. I’m unsure of the proper look, and it might look a bit too slim.
Also, I am going for a somewhat preppy look, not too preppy but just clean. Really not sure myself even. But if that’s anything to consider… yeah.
TL;DR any advice on the pants or really anything else in the pictures would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I agree the tops look pretty good
Chinos are too slim, both JCrew and Uniqlo should have roomier cuts
Problem isn't the waist size, it's the cut of that chino isn't right
I had no J. Crews near me so I had to go to Factory, if that affects anything.
I hear they are a bit cheaper price/quality so maybe something to do with that.
nah, these are just slim fit chinos. They're a common style, they're just pretty dated at this point.
Raisin is dead on, both brands will offer something less slim. You're looking for regular or straight cuts.
would that simply look better?
because yes these are slims
It depends on what you're after. Like I said, they're dated at this point so if you're concerned with not looking dated then yeah they'll look better.
There's nothing inherently wrong with em tho, and if you prefer the slimmer look then go for it.
ok. but does the sizing look ok besides the whole cut of the pants? like would you say the khakis too tight? just from a general standpoint.
sorry if that’s a tough question to answer, it can obviously vary and things for people differently
I just am not in any position to go and try out things atm
This whiskering at the crotch and thighs suggests that these are too small. The slim fit is exacerbating that smallness.
so you would recommend a size or two up in the waist?
if i were to get straight cut
or would it be different each way
This cut just might not work for you, and if you move to a straight or regular fit cut the issue may dissappear entirely. But it's impossible to speculate on unfortunately
yeah that’s what i was afraid of
I'd suggest finding a pair of pants that you own and like the fit of (any kind of pants) and comparing the measurements to those provided by jcrew and uniqlo on their sites. You don't have to order online, but it'll give you a better idea of what to look for in person.
i might have to dig to find anything that fits me well, but i’ll try :trolldespair:
