straw hole debate
genetic-orange•5mo ago
Infinite? WAS THAT AN INFINITE CHEF REFERENCE?
genetic-orange•5mo ago
it’s 1
straw? WAS THAT A SANDBOXELS REFERENCE?
genetic-orange•5mo ago
oh hey lvl 68
foreign-sapphire•5mo ago
one really deep hole
two? WAS THAT A TPOT REFERENCE?
genetic-orange•5mo ago
reason for 1 hole:
genetic-orange•5mo ago
is this one or 2 holes
it’s 1
variable-lime•5mo ago
a donut has 1 hole
a tall donut has 1 hole
a straw is a tall donut
genetic-orange•5mo ago
donut holes
variable-lime•5mo ago
@BATATA CAT explain why ∞ holes
optimistic-gold•5mo ago
Bc technically infinity can be diffferent sizes some infinities are bigger than other so i chose a infinity equal to 1
https://tenor.com/view/think-smart-gif-22411928
variable-lime•5mo ago
you were almost correct
optimistic-gold•5mo ago
🥲
variable-lime•5mo ago
hmm well maybe you can technically still be
optimistic-gold•5mo ago
:Rue: you really think so
:moji_troll:
variable-lime•5mo ago
variable-lime•5mo ago
desmos wont allow for infinity to be plugged in, but, if it did, it would return 1
conventional-tan•5mo ago
It’s 1
like-gold•5mo ago
yknow since atoms never touch there would be a HUGE number of holes that would be too much to count so can be known as infinity
variable-lime•5mo ago
maybe close to infinity but not truly
genetic-orange•5mo ago
close to infinityhow like isn’t infinity meant to be endless
variable-lime•5mo ago
true
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
0 : if bent into a toric shape
1 : if folded into a b shaped thing
2 : if straight, one on both ends
infinity: impossible, for obvious reasons
Infinity is not a massive number
It's a concept
genetic-orange•5mo ago
one on both endsthat would be an opening not a hole
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
hole=opening
genetic-orange•5mo ago
hole =/= opening
in some context yes
regarding a straw no
a hole could be an opening
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
still, it just means:
0: if flattened
1: if straight
2: if pinched in the middle
Infinite: same reason as before
genetic-orange•5mo ago
but an opening could also not be a hole
a hole is a hollow place in something
a straw is a hollow
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
but it doesn't matter anyway
genetic-orange•5mo ago
thus it’s a hole
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
infinity is the only impossible one
genetic-orange•5mo ago
hey i never mentioned infinity
adverse-sapphire•5mo ago
this version treats them as holes, not openings
variable-lime•5mo ago
variable-lime•5mo ago
any objections?
the cylinder on the right totally has a hole
variable-lime•5mo ago
not a hole
if u dig in the ground, u make a hole, and it’s just like that
variable-lime•5mo ago
is this a hole?
conventional-tan•5mo ago
ja
variable-lime•5mo ago
is this a hole?
conventional-tan•5mo ago
i think it depends on whether. or not it is supposed to be there
like if i dig a hole in the ground then yes
but like a spoon doesnt have a hole even if it has an indent
variable-lime•5mo ago
genetic-orange•5mo ago
my definition of a hole is it has to lead somewhere, it could be nothing but atleast somewhere
conventional-tan•5mo ago
i think the part surrounding it needs to be thicker than the part in it
complex-teal•5mo ago
i say “infinite” but it’s nerd time
variable-lime•5mo ago
so does this have a hole?
complex-teal•5mo ago
there are a lot of atoms in the straw, and atoms are usually connected in a hexagon formation (prob)
genetic-orange•5mo ago
does a cup have a hole
variable-lime•5mo ago
a coffee mug has a hole
right where the handle is
genetic-orange•5mo ago
is this a hole
complex-teal•5mo ago
fill a 2d space with a lot of balls with collisions for example
variable-lime•5mo ago
that is a pit
complex-teal•5mo ago
see the triangle spacing?
that is also the spacing between atoms
genetic-orange•5mo ago
:moji_troll:
variable-lime•5mo ago
hmmm
genetic-orange•5mo ago
genetic-orange•5mo ago
i thought this was a straw hole debate
not a “what is a hole” debate
variable-lime•5mo ago
according to google, straws have 2 or 1 hole, depending on if you use formal/informal
complex-teal•5mo ago
so the amount of visible holes are 2 but the amount of all of the holes are (a/3) + 2 where a = the amount of atoms in a straw
variable-lime•5mo ago
here is my brand new cup i just bought from pretend-mart
variable-lime•5mo ago
does my cup have a hole in it now?
complex-teal•5mo ago
yes
1 hole to be exact
variable-lime•5mo ago
hmmm thats not good
i must get that hole fixed!
genetic-orange•5mo ago
1 hole is meant to be there
the other isnt
variable-lime•5mo ago
is there any more holes in my cup?
genetic-orange•5mo ago
also how tf do you fix a glass cup
complex-teal•5mo ago
that cup does not have 2 holes. pits are holes with a bottom, holes are pits that appear as pits in the front and opposite direction
genetic-orange•5mo ago
pits are holes
variable-lime•5mo ago
holes are pits that appear as holes?
you cant define a word using itself
genetic-orange•5mo ago
ah yes variable = variable
variable-lime•5mo ago
wait no
variable-lime•5mo ago
ok so
variable-lime•5mo ago
is this what we are settling on
genetic-orange•5mo ago
yep
seems fair to me
variable-lime•5mo ago
does this have a hole in it?
i bring up: swiss cheese
question 1: are these holes that u see?
variable-lime•5mo ago
i cant tell if theres any "topological" holes
genetic-orange•5mo ago
no that’s a cut
i think anybody would say swiss cheese has holes!
variable-lime•5mo ago
ok
and if it does, what about the holes inside, with no exits?
variable-lime•5mo ago
oops
variable-lime•5mo ago
how about now
genetic-orange•5mo ago
crater
variable-lime•5mo ago
is a crater a hole?
genetic-orange•5mo ago
genetic-orange•5mo ago
probably
variable-lime•5mo ago
okay, well, how about now?
in ontomata, a hole is simply any lack of material in material
variable-lime•5mo ago
hm thats an interesting definition
i believe a straw would have 1 hole in ontomataverse
variable-lime•5mo ago
i think so too
its a singular cylinder shaped absence of material in the plastic
everything in ontomata exists because it is defined
variable-lime•5mo ago
hmm what would happen if you took a straw
and cut it down the middle, and flattened it into a sheet
it probably wouldnt be useful anymore
foreign-sapphire•5mo ago
brain not braining..
oh my
it could still be useful if u folded the half in half
variable-lime•5mo ago
would this be a hole since usually the sphere is meant to be a bit taller than this
hmmmm
no
i think it needs some depth
otherwise everything has holes everywhere
variable-lime•5mo ago
hmm
that’s a face (side)
variable-lime•5mo ago
what about this little section here in my double-donut?
variable-lime•5mo ago
it has depth
genetic-orange•5mo ago
it’s just 2 material combined
hmmmm id say it’s a hole
genetic-orange•5mo ago
id say it’s a cut
variable-lime•5mo ago
interesting
but there’s nothing different from a cross section of a hole in the ground
it’s just a different dimension of hole
genetic-orange•5mo ago
new thread: what the fuck is a hole
variable-lime•5mo ago
ontomatically, an absence of material in another material
topologically, a structure that prevents the object from being shrunk to a point
ontomacanonically
variable-lime•5mo ago
logically, its hard to define hole
since
things are complicated
a normal person would say a pit in the ground is a hole
but a normal person would also say a plate doesnt have holes
would a normal person say a bowl has a hole in it?
we need to find a normal person
like-gold•5mo ago
i just read this entire debat
dependent-tan•5mo ago
If you drilled through the core of the earth, from 1 side to the other, there would be 2 possible perspectives, making it 2 holes or 1 very deep hole, meaning that a straw's holes depend on the perspective, if you look INTO the straw, then there is 1 hole, but if you look at the sides, then there are 2
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it has topologically 1 hole
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
That's not a thing lol
Cylinder has one hold
Yes
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
the one on the right?
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Yes
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it doesn't
that's not a hole
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Yes it is
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
you can flatten the cylinder and you don't have it anymore
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Huh?
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
and if you flatten a torus the hole will not disappear
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Dafuqs a torus?
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
a doughnut
a bagel
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
It becomes one hole
Instead of 2
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it was always 1 hole
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
yuh uh
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
Straw has 2 holes
Tortus has 2 holes
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
if I were to shoot someone, would they have 2 bullet holes?
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Yes
If
It didn't get stopped
By inside of body
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
tens of thousands police reports are wrong then
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
K?
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
that's a single bullet hole
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Appeal to not even an authority
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it just went all the way through
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
It's 2
genetic-orange•5mo ago
it is a single bullet hole
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
appeal to science, topology is well studied
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh the fuck uh
Science calls things that shouldn't be called things the things they shouldn't be called
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
no, you do that
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
For example
The word theory
Means different things
Between an official and unofficial context
Same with hole
genetic-orange•5mo ago
your brain is a theory
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Or like chemical
One that is true
It's a theory about how smart it is
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
that's why I said topologically
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Yea
I don't care about topolo-whatever
Hole is an opening
variable-lime•5mo ago
technically since i can not verify wether or not he (or his brain) actually exists, true
anyways this guy is clearly insane and should not be counted
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it's a study about objects and how they deform so about as accurate as it gets
better than someone who said 0
actually that has some merit and makes some sense
genetic-orange•5mo ago
Enlighten me
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
it's a plane that is rolled up
genetic-orange•5mo ago
oh yeah
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
that creates a hole but still
variable-lime•5mo ago
some people might also not count it as a hole since its meant to be there
genetic-orange•5mo ago
i think its like
the amount of holes there is supposed to be + the amount added
variable-lime•5mo ago
jesus christ i can not figure out for the life of me how to get this eevee glass shader to act normally. anyways how many holes does it have
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
I think 3?
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
useful-bronze•5mo ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-PQ-pUVeho
to anybody who voted 0, 2 or infinte holes:
its topology which is math which is always correct
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
useful-bronze•5mo ago
if you do it your way then its going to be almost impossible to count holes in a complicated object
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
If you ask a person on the street what a chemical is
And you ask a scientist what a chemical is
You will get 2 very different answers
If you ask (certain) mathematicians what a trapezoid is
And a random person on the street what a trapezoid is
You will get different answers
It's the same with hole
useful-bronze•5mo ago
asking how many holes a straw has and getting 1 is both mathematicly correct and intuitively correct
eastern-cyan•5mo ago
Nuh uh
It's 2
useful-bronze•5mo ago
well this is 2
what's worse is the other person who voted infinity, (probably because of all the bumps in the straw material)
that isn't counted
harsh-harlequin•5mo ago
yeah because a random person on the street is not as educated as the scientist
and out of all things you could've choose, you chose 2 things that have a really solid definition
is a bald spot a hole
like-gold•4mo ago
bro wha
dependent-tan•3mo ago
do the tiny holes in your hair follicles count as holes or are they too small
genetic-orange•3mo ago
those are pores
adverse-sapphire•3mo ago
in the topological sense, no
