bazzite just does not install in any way.
(on a steam deck)
I fear I may be way out of my depths here, and need some help installing properly.
I have used Linux exclusively for a few years now, and never had any distro so completely just not work.
Currently, the installer always errors out before anaconda can launch, but when I did get through to anaconda yesterday, I always hit some error with flat packs not being accessible (?).
I have tried installing fedora silver blue and then rebasing, but anaconda for silver blue is way too zoomed in, so that any confirm, skip ETC. Buttons are just not visible / appear to not exist at all, as I can't even tab to them.
Therefore, I can't install silver blue at all.
Does anyone have any idea what I could try at all?
I have thought about installing with a WM onto an usb-stick and then DD-ing that stick onto the deck's SSD, but I do not trust my terminal skills enough to think I can pull that off.
I have also tagged this question subtle cry for help as a bug as well, as the check hard drive and install option of the bazzite ISO just hard-crashes, and the ISO just does not boot through ventoy at all, both of which I count as bugs.

is this oled?
no, standard sd
256gb
thats weird i thought it is the oled bug
which method did you try to flash the iso?
well
thats going to be a long list
i used baleana ether, DD, fedora flasher
did you verify the iso md5?
and ventoy
no, i should probably try that.
though i did re-download the iso thrice, and tried 2 diferent versions, so file-integrity issues are unlikely
also i think fedora media writer is the most reliable method
beside ventoy
well, ventoy just does not boot at all.
also you sure the flashdisk isnt the problem?
it works for all other OS's on that ventoy stick, but not bazzite / fedora silverblue
sometimes you just write one too many times
oh, i did reinstall ventoy on another stick (had to do that anyways, as silverblue didn't fit on that one)
and i tried it with a framework 1tb usb-c strage module, so i am pretty shure it's not a bad stick...
anyways, i don't see any md5 checksum-tutorial on the download site as its common with other distros.
is there any WIKI site on how to check that checksum?
hmm, maybe just retry again, steamdeck lcd should be basically work ootb
yea, it dosn't for me lol
i seen someone missed something cause theyre too frustrated
like not ejecting usb properly
that's not it.
i am pretty stingent on ejecting, + it would not happen to me for every stick i tried
i just checked the wiki and steamdeck require ventoy for proper scaling, just incase did you check this?
again, i tried ventoy, neither bazzite nor silverblue start in any way from ventoy for me.
did you check the xhci?
like, i chose bazzite, the screen goes dark, and stays that way
yep
i mean, it litterally says to check that right next to the ISO's download
i think you get why i am so confused / frustrated with my issue(s)
anyway what are you trying now? fedora media writer?
at the moment, i have a stick with ventoy (which only works with non-silverblue based distros), one i installed with fedora, and one i DD-ed the ISO on
its all a bit cursed
really weird
did you ever tried basic graphic mode?
no, how do i enable it?
didn't even know that existed
should be an option when booting
huh, ill look for it
when i get the SD booting again, the battery just went null
it is troubleshooting -> basic graphic mode
ok, so the ISO seems to work in a WM, so it looks like this would be a hardware issue.
in the next step i'll try to remove the harddrive from the deck, and installing onto a external USB drive.
in that case, ill at least know if it's a harddrive issue, which would also explain the disk check crshing on start
but i can still get into the steamOS recovery image, which would again sugest that the hardware is fine
anyway, I have ventoy working again.
IDK why, it just works again.
true. sand was not intended to do matrix math
Oh, and I am in the bazzite installer again. Excuse the bad image quality, my phone is currently in rice for "having spend an evening in the North Sea" reasons, so I am taking photos with my laptop
so anyways, i am installing to an external harddrive now
or i am not
but i finally have a clear error;
probably dirty efi
the harddrive is completely empty...
oh different things then
no, actually, the previous attempts to install had made new EFI partitions (note the plural).
lets see if the next attempts, after a wipe, works.
ok, so the harddrive is EMPTY now, so lets see what happens
Well, there are no errors anymore, but the installation has been stuck for almost 5 minutes now.
welp, the flatpack error is back
that issue should be caused by corrupted iso
yea, but the iso works on a WM?
could be corrupted while writing
but at this point try rebasing maybe?
you mean installing silverblue, and then going from there?
yeah
one other solution is to generate the iso yourself
because if yes, please note that silverblues installer is bricked on SD, because anacondas scalling is way to high, meaning half the options are out of view
and you cant tab to them either
ill try to boot it from SD, so i can use the US plug for image out, since a higher screen res may allow silverblues installer to work
did you try with ventoy?
it supposed to fix it
at this moment, i am using ventoy again, because it works again
and, well, fedora is erroring about again.
I may have missed it but have you tried using another USB drive?
i did, several
i also flashed with several means
Though I think that ill just go back to steamOS now.
It looks like any silverblue-related OS is just not a thing on my steam deck
Especially since my USB-hub is starting to have issues, which is making it harder and harder to actually connect a USB keyboard.
BTW. not having an on-screen keyboard on a distro meant for touch devices is just a mistake, no further context needed.
Or it’s just the hub not working correctly, considering the IO error
the issue is that the hubs battery is getting low, it was full this morning
ill just wait untill there is a on screen keyboard in the installer, then try again
Fair point
since i'dll be more comfortable then, and ill be able to remove like 5 possible points of failure
ok, got bazzite working by installing from SD without internet
now i only have to figure out how the actuall heck i open the on screen keyboard and the gaming mode
but i think that, i will manage.
