mmorpg/pokemon Swrver

I have a streamer friend that wanted to have like a mmorpg game and I mentioned that we could have a Pixelmon and other mmorpg mods on a server and that way, his viewers can play 24/7 But idk where to start

just find a modpack u like on curseforge or modrinth, get a host, use their 1 click installer, and have fun

Alr , Ive been thinking about it, I wanted to self host but I also don't want my ip to be everywhere, how can I self host without big risks
QarthO
QarthO6mo ago
I’d recommend thinking again. If you want to self host but don’t want to expose your ip, then you’ll either have really bad latency (free tunnels are really bad) or you’ll have to pay for a quality one. So if ur going to pay for a quality one, just spend that money on an actual host.

Alr thanks

depending on how complex the setup you need is just use TCPShield they offer a free tier that for up to 1tb monthly that will obfuscate your IP but they will only handle with traffic on port 25565 TCP for that plan you'd need a domain for that to work which is like $8 USD a year depending on the TLD

GMROP6mo ago
and with this, i can self hjost
Rurik
Rurik6mo ago
yea you just point TCPShield towards ur residential IP you ideally want a static IP

I was told that mmorpg and pixelmon is too common Idk what else the server should be about

QarthO6mo ago
Unfortunately that not a question we can answer. I’d recommend asking the community and seeing what they want

* that's really low
Rurik
Rurik6mo ago
i mean yea but for like 10 concurrent players will do the job
QarthO
QarthO6mo ago
not really if the server open world, and people explore 10 concurrent will easily go over 1tb. It also just takes 1 person to fk u over by flying around on the elytra or a pokemon
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
it won't do the job

GMROP6mo ago
so what should i use then because i was gonna plan to ugprade eventually
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
You still want to localhost?
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
Yea
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
Well maybe neoprotect But realistically for free there isn't much
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
Dw i am willing to pay
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
Budget?
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
uhh max 40? or 30
QarthO
QarthO6mo ago
for 30 to 40/month you'l get a better solution from an actual host instead of selfhosting (signifcantly better)
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
Yep.. So yea, not worth localhost with a 30- 40 budget, you can find good deals here https://discord.com/channels/348681414260293634/1119390057799876738

Welp, cobble mon and pixelmon don't have a version for paper
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
What? It's a modded server of course.. But why would you need paper?
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
For the admin plugins and all that?
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
If you go modded you do modded
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
And some of the factions sttuff
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
There are hybrid servers but.. I don't recommend em. On the same server or can be other ?
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
Same?
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
Yea well you can't really have plugins and mods at the same time unless you go for a hybrid server.. which eh.. I don't recommend.
QarthO
QarthO6mo ago
there are plenty of fabric mods that are like admin plugins
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
Yea that too
GMR
GMROP6mo ago
could you list some i could use>
QarthO
QarthO6mo ago
luckperms - permissions cadmus + argonauts - claims/teams
alternatively, can use flan, which is similar to griefprevention
styled chat - customize chat, supports minimessage/luckperms/placeholderapi styled tab list - same as above but for tab list huskhomes - /homes /warps /tpa /rtp yet another world protector - world guard but for fabric bluemap or pl3xmap - just like dynmap, but isnt shit like dynmap (never use dynmap) ledger - coreprotect feel free to look on modrinth, theres plenty of mods, just set it to fabric

chunk generation is local though? unless i'm missing smthn
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
You are sending the chunk information tho..
Rurik
Rurik6mo ago
yea but generating new chunks isnt costing more bandwidth vs sending already generated ones i can scrape my usages monthly but honestly for 10 players concurrent max if the free tier isn't enough definitely the 3tb tier is
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
I can ensure you in a month 1tb is..
Rurik
Rurik6mo ago
new month kicked in so my data is spotty but this is for an average playercount of 300 with spike periods of up to 800 over july

1tb prolly won't be enough but i reckon the guy can easily stretch it up to 3tb and pass alternatively unless there's a specific reason to self-host for the $25 a month you could just get a half decent VPS
MrDadone
MrDadone6mo ago
vps with small servers isn't worth it, vps - dedis are good for bigger networks, small networks are more than fine with game servers

never did i mention chunk gen vs already gen'd. thats nothing to do with bandwith. sending over chunk data takes bandwith. if ur on a pokemon/elytra flying and u fly over 100s of chunks u have to send those chunks. keep in mind if have a standard view distance, this would be 10s of thousands of chunks. 1tb with 10 concurrent on an open world server isnt good but also if the map is small, and people tend to not move around then ur chilling. However on a pokemon server, pokemon spawn in specific biomes, so people WILL be moving around a lot, (and loading different dimensions etc) ur gonna eat a lot of bandwith (once again, doesnt matter if these chunks were gen'd or not, the server still has to send these chunks to the client) i think the paid tier is perfectly fine. however thats $25/month so why not spend that $25/month on an actual minecraft host? the performance will be better. uptime better. zero maintenance and zero power costs. never risking your own ip, comes with ddos. 100x easier to setup.
