Wrichik Basu (ping on reply pls) - Could someon...
Could someone help me with this calculation please? I had booked a 5-year FD with HDFC in July 2022 of ₹6L principal @ 5.67% pa. I want to liquidate it now. HDFC website says the following:
The interest rate applicable for premature withdrawal including Sweep-in/Partial Withdrawal will be 1% lower (as applicable) of the rate on the date of deposit booked, to the period for which deposit remained with the bank and not at the contracted rate.So am I correct in assuming that my effective interest rate will become 4.67% pa? If yes, as per the previous interest rate, I have received ₹68,040 till date, and as per the new rate, I would have received ₹56,040 instead. Which means ₹12k will be deducted from my principal when liquidating. Am I correct?

But if they have already paid the interest, they have to deduct the excess from somewhere. I guess they deduct it from the savings account itself.

Just did that, and this doesn't make any sense to me. "Interest you can earn if you maintain FD till maturity" is ₹14,724, while I am getting ₹34k anually, and still have three years left to mature. "Recovery from principal due to additional interest paid to your account" is ₹68k, which is higher than the interest I have earned till date as per their own calculations. Moreover, "net amount to be credited to your account" = ₹5.87L, and the "recovery from principal" amount doesn't make any sense.

From the AIS of the last two fiscal years, I can see that HDFC has reported FD interest of ₹59,346. This is till March 2024. The FD itself is monthly-paying. Adding the amounts received from April - July this FY, the total comes to ₹70k. This is what I have received till date from this FD.
