If you put your ear to the ground you can hear the distant stampede of social media content creators scrambling to get their 'IS SUPREME DEAD????' pieces out first
why does everyone hate luxottica other than they’re a big company again?
As far as I can tell, they don’t own any other clothing brands? Is this correct?
virtual monopoly on eyewear
They don’t.
That’s a myth
There’s 2 companies that own like 20 luxury brands
And unless you’re saying all 40 brands are the only glasses companies you are wrong
They don’t own Zenni, warby Parker, and eyebyedirect
They don’t own MOST sunglasses brands and a lot of non luxury ones
Gentle monsters are not luxottica
RETROSUPERFUTURE not luxottica
Sun buddies not luxottica
Hell gas station sunglasses and all mall brands outside of sunglasses but are not luxottica
Tbf there was a period where they had much more control over the market, but it’s changed a lot
Still it was the luxury space and you could’ve always found alternatives
Also I think this was early in the era of people understanding that branding and quality were fairly disconnected and it felt like learning a big secret about corporate America trying to trick you
I think that’s fair
But yeah luxottica bad is a tired take in 2024
I think being a big company is a good enough reason to hate luxottica though
I hate kerring too
And lvmh
Big company bad
Yea sure hence why I disclaimed other than a large company
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/does-luxottica-own-80-of-the-eyeglass-industry/ seems its a mix of both

Does Luxottica Own 80% of the Eyeglass Industry?
It's true that Luxottica controls a large chunk of the eyewear industry, but possibly not nearly as much as 80 percent.
Large chunk yes we’ve known but they were never and have never been a monopoly
Our brands - Safilo Group
Every day, we create unique, high-quality eyewear designs that help people to express their personality and style to the full.
Every article that claims they’re a monopoly is as bishop says almost a decade old
The highest figure I could find for sunglasses market share is 60% and I bet that doesn’t include gas station sunglasses or drop shipped Amazon sunglasses
they don't have the highest swag sunglasses because they don't own JMM or Rigards
and everything char said https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1263113323520462869/1263164833491189841
though it's more of a few companies having a monopoly on market share/money than on swag
it's also not meaningful to me, circling back to 'preme, that it's been sold by one conglomerate to another
it's not like supreme is some indie brand, big or small
they were already part of a sprawling portfolio
imagine having a monopoly on swag
I couldn't tbh
Supreme Oakley collab will go hard idc
i’m surprised that they sold Supreme, they didn’t acquire them that long ago iirc
As I understand it, the criticism of Luxottica isn’t just that they own a lot of big brand glasses, but their vertical integration of owning the brands, the stores, the laboratories and the manufacturing. And then using this position to outcompete and outmanoeuvre potential competitors. I guess people are sort of aware of Luxottica because it intersects with healthcare, that is if you need prescription glasses
in the last couple of years they have also expanded further into other countries acquiring other key players in the market
That other companies operate similarly (e.g Live Nation) doesn’t make Luxottica less bad imo
