idk where you're posting from, but in most countries any eye makeup at all will be seen as feminine. You just gotta say fuck gender norms, I'm doing what I want
i live in the uk
i do already wear makeup out just not MAKEUP makeup, like i wear blush mascara and a base foundation with highlight in my inner corners
aswell as feminine features, but my area is pretty rough so that’s why i don’t wanna go too extreme with makeup
gender norms isn’t rlly something i struggle with , just simply trying to convert her style into a male format is difficult
so help would be appreciated
you watch green day's jesus of suburbia music video on repeat until the transformation happens
I mean effy’s super distinct eyeliner is pretty extreme, if you wanna do the look justice i think you’ll have to lean into it
more pictures of her outfits i could find
definitely, i think i could do it similar with mascara though? just slightly smudged
but how does that even convert to male style
Billie joe armstrong from greenday famously had dark eyeliner for a long time maybe look at him for some inspo
i think a lot of her makeup has the like
sleeped in affect
like worn a face of makeup to bed type vibe
switching the skirts out for shorts is an idea
im definitely not a short kinda guy, but i definitely see it
maybe jeans would work instead
depending on colour..?
dude I know my advice sounds like a joke, but actually check out the music video for styling ideas
just from the reference material her two modes seem to be 'tiny bottom' or 'black sinny jeans'
one big issue i have is
i do not want it to come off as like wannabe cringe ygm?? like mega tiktok style vibes like i want it to be authentic
yeah ill do that
thanks dude
She definitely has like a mix between 00’s indie and grunge. I would seek out ratty flannels, fucked up black slim jeans, black and white converse
Stuff in like that vein
if you're so inclined to wear jewelry that would also be a marker
a lot of the necklaces and jewlery she wears you can get at charity shops here in the uk
i think the big thing is the attitude
confidence makes ANYONE attractive
and moreso just being okay with wearing that sort of stuff even if it's impractical
i think the makeup for real brings it together though
ill definitely try to lean into it, just not in my comfort zone atm 😭
and that's fair! the key is being willing to try this out and see how you feel
i think her facial features also just work for the look
you might dress like this a few times and realize it's not going to work, or you might dress like this once and realize this is Your Style; there's only one way to find out 👍
ill definitely test out the makeup in a bit
thank u for the helppp!!
i missed a good amount of this convo but let me recommend posting fit pics in #styling-suggestions with specific questions on what you want to improve or ask for general styling advice
(or honestly ive found a good amount of my own growth just posting in #waywt )
Being from the UK, you've got the entire history of punk at your fingertips. Start with Sex Pistols / Vivien Westwood and work forward till you hit something inspiring. Those bands in the 70s/80s wore makeup all the time and it was badass. You can also look over at Lou Reed on the American side.
i loveeeee vivi
based on what you just posted in waywt Kurt Cobain might be good inspo as well
Yah i think you’ll find alot of what you want from VW
ill look into it, thank u :3
i did the makeup too but idk how i feel about showing face here atm 😞
do what you feel you're comfortable with; mfa is largely cool but it is still the internet
sometimes there's benefit to going through the whole process of putting a look together for your own sake, even if no one else will see
honestly im fine with it but im a very feminine guy so im not sure how that settles
okay ykw whatever
with the makeup i tried to smudge the mascara, not a HUGE amount but i think im gonna go ahead and buy a black eyeliner and do my waterline with that and try and smudge the mascara a little more to make it darker, but for a first attempt not bad i think 😼😼
i feel like you can’t notice
will retry later ☹️
- clothes don’t have a gender but if you’re worried about your safety that’s a different story
- this look falls fairly squarely into older emo/grunge/punk looks. Digs, raisin and classclown have given you good advice. Vivienne Westwood is a great reference. It’s also well documented on the Japanese street fashion scene (fruits, Tokyo fashion and others)
- look at the reference outfits you provided + the sources of inspo referenced above and think about things like palette (look like a lot of red, black gray and not a lot of pink and cerulean blue, for example)
- tiny cutoff shorts, skinny pants, red/white and black patterns (tartan, flannel, stripes), overalls, long but not boxy graphic tees, distressed items
- docs/solovairs/converse as entry points for sneakers, combat boots, front zips, derbies, creepers
- tights/leggings, layered big long dangly necklaces
Going to post some “less feminine” possible inspo here, but this style as I understand it is gonna draw attention most places. Good luck
I think the eye makeup is too subtle for the reference but it looks good otherwise
woah thanks for the help
when i say less feminine i mean like
masculine conversions
like basically kinda the same fits but for a dude
right but I wouldn’t fixate on that after a certain point.
cultural perceptions of what constitutes masculine or feminine are evolving.
Nearly all of the fits I linked I think fit in your genre, and with the exception of the crop top/low rise jeans one I don’t think read as too feminine.
I think fixating on that is a trap as opposed to “what elements of this look can I draw inspiration from and incorporate into my wardrobe to do the thing I’m trying to do”
i would say they’re too like, dressy ? im not sure how to explain it
i feel like her outfits lean into very British stereotypes sorta like this
very early 2000s
same kinda vibes
i think i could replicate most of her outfits by switching out the bottoms of the outfits
e.g replacing skirt with shorts or jeans
🫡
hm I might also recommend getting more minimal with the makeup
bad skin, a little bit of facial hair, can act as a countering gender indicator in a way that I think is pretty cool
like, the makeup is feminine, the style is feminine, people are gonna see you as a girl if everything you wear and display is feminine
so you need something to counter or confuse that perception, but you're also gonna probably have to deviate from the vibe a bit
Effie’s look falls into the category of Indie Sleeze which is heavily inspired by punk as mentioned above. For inspo i’d reccomend checking out some bands that were popular in the mid-to-late-2000s like The Strokes, The Libertines, etc
Crystal Castles, MGMT, Interpol
Could also try the documentary "Meet Me In The Bathroom" for that particular 00s NY indie aesthetic
there’s an indie sleaze IG account as well if you’re on IG
this is good advice for the question tbh
agree 😭 ive been asked if i was a girl more than 3 times before
the kate moss photo
yes that’s cute
