I just started playing the game and I'm horrible at it. What are the best ways to become better?

To get better at the game, just simply play it. To get familiar with the characters and their abilities I would suggest playing the TDM game mode :Brim_SeemsGood:

Don't use earbuds, use wired headphones.
Turn up the computer volume around 5 more than usual
Ever get that sense of impending doom? Get to an isolated angle and listen to that feeling.
Tilt the Smurf on the enemy team. Try to find and util dump the enemy smurf
Smurf on your team? Tell them they are the best. When they screw up, laugh it off and and say, I didn't see anything, ego stroke them
If no one is communicating, Don't communicate yourself. It is easier to not engage, if no one else is.
Find two main roles
Controller and duelist, initiator and sentinel. Don't be a one trick pony
Good picks for agents to unlock first for every role:
Smokes: omen
Sentinel: cypher
Initiator: Gekko
Duelist: Yoru
The best duelists are jett and raze, but raze has a high learning curve, and jett is unlocked immediately
Cypher is easy to use, and playing against one is annoying AF
Omen, brim and clove are the best controllers on most maps. Viper is better on abyss, breeze and icebox.
Gekko's util doesn't need precision and the flash is like aimbot
The best initiators are Gekko, sova, and Kay/o, the latter two need more time to learn, or need a majority of people comming
Crosshair placement. The single boxes on many maps provide a good reference for head height.
duelist has to be reyna tho π
@Alex :) how do u want to play in your matchs? agility? stalling and letting your team do stuff while u stay alive while contributing? healer? Being the one who leaves the team and goes to lurk around? be a bomb planter/defuser?
+ use low sensi

Sorry I didnt mention this but you should watch a video on the variety of settings that can help you out. One of the many settings that helped me out was changing the enemies borders to yellow. Because yellow is a brighter color than red it allows people to react to enemies faster and see them easier. I will leave some links to videos below
