Moving from Windows to Linux, where do I even start?
I have a server that use to be my old gaming PC from 2019. I already host MC servers off of it, but they run not that well, and I believe it may have to do with the fact that it runs off of windows 11.
How much of a performance increase would I get from this? And where exactly would I start.
(I have never worked with linux before either), or used it)

what's the server you're running? does it have a lot of mods? lot of players? what's your cpu and ram? what's "they run not that well"?
because a simple windows to linux won't do any miracles for you performance wise
So, im working on a server solely running of a datapacks, but my old serve use to be 1.20.1 Origins server with better end and some other not so big mods.
It could run around 10 players at 20tps, and around 30 it run at like 13-15tps.
Alot of background network usage stuff was running though alongside it that I wasnt unable to uninstall from years of use.
oh yea datapacks are extremely inefficient
compared to plugins or mods
Its pretty simple though
Its just a raycast that stops on any block for a gun system
i see
Also the server wont have any generation of sorts, as its in a void world.
My big worry is its network usage as thats what ive had issues with prior past though
The server peaks around 400MB download, and 30 MB upload, but it has a whole bunch of windows side stuff running with it I cant stop.
Full answer to this
Windows 11. City RP server. (hl2rp). No mods, solely datapacks. (1), but uses commands for custom entities.
32 GB Ram, DDR4
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6 core
Lag Problems
TPS is 20, but players seem to run laggily (High pings.)
Their is no world generation either. (Preset map

sorry was doing something
windows side stuff?
Some random ass phone app, razer synapse which i havent been able to uninstall since 2021, and a web browser.
Though browser isnt always open.
Heres all the stuff currently running.
Im likely soon to factory reset it, but was owndering if it be a good idea to swap to linux or remain on window.s
Also this is only one tab. Theirs all kinds of xbox things, and other windows 11 side stuff that just runs in the background.
well i mean if you're going to run a server ubuntu or debian is nice
linux in general has less bloat
did you know there's a hotkey to open linkedin on windows? yea shit is insane
do
Shift + Ctrl + Win + Alt + L
rn and you'll see what i mean
but also to be quite fair even breathing wrong on linux can permanently fuck something up. linux has 0 handholding and expects you to know wtf u are doingi tried to do that shortcut and just enabled narrarotr and openned visual studio somehow ðŸ˜
what is linkedin ðŸ˜
Forgo to put how many players expected,
Peak, 80+ possibly.
Non-peak, 20.

One thing I extremely like about Linux is the ✨ Magic SysRq key ✨
Magic SysRq key
The magic SysRq key is a key combination understood by the Linux kernel, which allows the user to perform various low-level commands regardless of the system's state. It is often used to recover from freezes, or to reboot a computer without corrupting the filesystem. Its effect is similar to the computer's hardware reset button (or power switch...

anyways back to the original question, is it worht it to swap to linux as im going to factory reset the system soon and watned to know what would be best
It shouldn't have much effect on the mc server which OS the host is running,
It just comes down to personal preference for which command line you like using more, if you don't normally use command line at all, it will make just about 0 difference. Other than like how others said linux tends to be less bloated than windows
The 'most complicated' part is just moving all the files over, but whether you're running linux or windows or mac shouldn't affect that process.
Mac is the only OS that should be avoided like the plague
