black screen when booting bazzite-deck on RX580 (Polaris)
I noticed in my GitHub notifications that a Polaris fix for gamescope landed in bazzite, but when I rebased back to
bazzite-deck and rebooted my TV doesn’t show Game Mode Steam.
I heard the Steam boot sound, and if I move the sticks on my controller I can hear it moving around the menus. It’s just black…17 Replies
was not getting that myself when testing on my htpc (i did notice though i had to swap my cables through as i have 2 screens and gamescope sdl backend does not respect the output connector set through env var)
If it is similar to what i get on the legion go sometimes, try press the power button once to put the system into sleep and then wake it again (fixes it on the legion go)?
bit hard for me to dig more into this myself since i am about to leave for vacation for 3 weeks soon
I have updated the github message for now though to recommend people to pin the current deployment.
I’ll try unplugging my second screen — I did notice I was getting an error about the frequency on it being out of range instead of it just being blank like before.
I have a DisplayPort output going to a cheap 1080p60 Dell monitor, and the HDMI output is going to a splitter with a 12 year old 1080p60 Sony TV on its first output and a cheap portable 1080p60 OLED monitor on the second.
So they all should use the same or similar timings anyway…
Okay cool, at the very least it boots visibly with the DisplayPort display turned off!
I saw someone replied to the GitHub issue mentioning it being stuck at 720p, and it looks like that might be the case, my screen seems blurrier than normal… but if nothing else I can probably pin the previous deployment
Yeah for me I noticed in testing the only anomaly was the non working keyboard and mouse, plus that gamescope session forced itself on my secondary screen. Even though the other screen was set as default with and env var for gamescope, so I had to swap the cables connectors for the screens.
It was already much better than non functional session so we shipped the workaround as it was and we have now made warnings too for people installing for the first time on Polaris systems (should come in next successful build)
It should not be in 720p though? We have a patch that stops that... Easiest would be to check in a game
I mean something’s definitely weird about the output signal if my Dell screen can’t sync to it, but unfortunately none of my screens display any info about the output signal
I’ll try it and see how it goes, and worst case I’ll roll back to my pinned deployment
my guess would be that the monitor doesnt like whatever resolution+refresh rate it tries to use
Yeah that’s my guess as well, I just don’t know where it’s deciding what to use lol
one of my monitors does not like 720p in general
does not complain if i set 1024x768 or 800x600 though
i noticed that one when i tried installing proxmox on my server and well, only 1 of my 5 monitors at the time worked with the resolution the installer set 🤣
Yeah I think I’ve seen a screen that does that before. Weird. At least game mode works on my TV now if I turn the Dell screen off though
yeah turning the monitor off is a new one for me but at least it works! somewhat
the whole backend switch is new for gamescope and has some issues but its at least functional compared to before
if my brain would let me comprehend c and c++ i would gladly patch gamescope myself to fix at least the 720p issue on the sdl backend.

Don't install sunshine using ujust, it broke gamescope for me with black/whitescreen
If someone tries to use a RX580: This issue is still relevant. Black screen on boot. Use old versions
I will be home soon in a few days so I will be able to look back into this then as I will have access to the system with my Polaris card

I did install the old repository key to back to version 39 to get things work again. On 40 i got too much problem. System could not sleep. Cannot switch to desktop mode or get black screen. Cannot change resolution un ganescope, even dev settings enable trought api. I did update my bios of my motherboard it seem to help with my rx580 GPU. And mouse is not working in gamescope too.
we are currently shipping 2 gamescope versions, an older version for polaris cards and the newer one for everything else.
im in the middle of testing this solution
i dont use much sleep though
