controller keyboard & mouse input on desktop mode

so on gnome on my llgo, i have both a "ps5 dualsense" and a steam controller (yes, the one from 2015 lol) that both use a keyboard + mouse controller scheme for a game: minecraft (through prism launcher). i added it as a non-steam game, and in the steam deck ui, it works fine! however, on desktop mode (gnome in this case), it doesn't work! it uses what i believe is called "turtle mode", where the right side is mouse, triggers are left & right click, etc. it doesn't change when running minecraft/prism launcher through steam, which is not fun because i have a specific steam input layout that i customized. any ideas?
