Proton failing in steam

Proton in Steam suddenly stopped working. Have tried Proton experitmental, 9.0-2, and GE-Proton9-7, all of which produce the same result in the screenshot. I have tried disabling and enabling the compatibility tool and have restarted and updated the system.

Are you doing anything with a secondary drive?

no, but I did just recently have to move my games over to a new location because steam wasn't opening earlier. Don't know if there is a way to link to another post

Where did you move them to? And how is that not a secondary drive?

technically same location they were before, but I renamed the original folder they were in to /home/.local/share/.Steam so that a new folder was created at the location /home/.local/share/Steam (no period), and then moved the folders within the .Steam/steamapps/common to Steam/steamapps/common

Sometimes if you switch between Proton and GE-proton you need to remove the compat folder for your game (you can find the id by looking up the game on ProtonDB) and let steam remake it. Sometimes it's safer to rename the folder as games like The Sims keep the save games in there
