Anyone have tips on faking references? I was considering using a friend but am unsure how much DD companies typically do on references

r/jobreferences exists but I've never tried it

Questions reference checking usually do are along the lines of:
- How long have you known/worked with [applicant]?
- What kind of work did [applicant] do and how did you work with him/her? (sometimes they just ask for reference's version of the work you did, sometimes they also ask in what ways did the reference and you work together)
- What's a strength/weakness of [applicant's]?
- Would you work again with [applicant]?
A friend can do this, a real coworker, sometimes you can be your own reference

Appreciate it! That makes sense to me. My concern is if you use a fake reference, are they going to sniff around that person, e.g., check their linkedin etc.?
(ofc wouldn't know for sure, but just curious how typical it is for the company to dig around)

There's a nonzero risk of that happening certainly but I don't think it's very likely. You can just make sure your reference either doesn't have a linkedin, has a private linkedin, isn't easily searchable, or linkedin matches the description of them you gave to the company.
I imagine it's not typical they'd put that much energy into it's. It's just HR running the rounds for hiring someone, they don't wanna put more effort in than they have to.
There do seem to be some companies out there that put more effort into it like wanting video calls with references or wanting a work email specifically. I haven't run into this but it's out there.

Makes sense--thank you!

If you do encounter those and can't insist out of it, then you'll just have to drop those offers and move on.
