What are the expected costs of running a server?
I'm not sure if this question should go here or in marketplace, putting it here first since this doesn't feel quite right in marketplace since I'm not trying to buy/sell anything at the moment.
I was wondering what the costs would be for someone just getting into hosting.
I'd imagine the 2 main costs would be
- an upfront financial investment in getting the hardware for a server, like a physical box to play on
- a monthly upkeep cost coming from things for keeping the server online
I was wondering what sort of costs those might be, like what I should expect if I'm coming into this sorta blind. The group I play with is fairly small, usually under 15 players max, but it is usually modded, so I'm not even 100% sure how good of a box I would need.

I wouldn't suggest getting a box if you're just playing with a group of friends tbh
Unless you really know whta you're doing with everything, you have good internetspeeds, and you can trust givingthem your IP
And of course more factors, but that's some
I totally agree, I mainly just wanted to get a cost estimate to show somebody else how much it'll cost.
Price comparing, you know?
Gotcha well it would depend on what box you'd get, you could run a lower end one which wouldn't be the best for Minecraft but a couple hundred dollars and should perform decent for your needs
what about monthly upkeep? How much should I expect my internet bill to go up, are there any additional costs for like for the url, keeping it conected, stuff like that?
I'd imagine this is more than a 1 and done purchase
You'd be paying for power, would probably want 1Gig uplink
you want at least 50mbps both ways
preferably
I figure I'll need to upgrade my internet, idk how much I'll have to increase my monthly internet bill by for it though, or how much I'd be paying for power
depends really
if you're gonna have it on 24/7
the cpu, etc
most likely
the group I play with has a pretty spread out schedule around classes and some are kinda nocturnal, so it wouldn't surprise me to have someone want to get on at any given hour
hmm that's fair
you can always try using something like Minecraft server hibernation, where the server turns off with no players and turns on once a player tries to join
that would save some cpu resources
