Game streaming (Sunshine/moonlight and Steam link) really slow on Bazzite

Hi, I've recently installed Bazzite and am new to Linux. For the most everything works great. One thing I'm having issues with though is streaming games from my PC to my tv through AppleTV. I've tried using both Steam link and Sunshine/moonlight but the result is always the same, it's really slow to the point where it's a struggle just browsing through the Steam menu. I'm not having this issue when on windows. Could it be a problem with the Graphics drivers? I'm running a RTX 3080 and from what I've understood Nvidia drivers and Wayland don't swing well together, which i've experienced and therefor use X11. So if that's the issue I guess I'll just have to wait for 555, or is there anything else causing it that is fixable? Thanks!
Solution:
I just wanted to update this since I solved the problem. I noticed that it's the big picture mode that is laggy and not the actual stream and since I almost only use steam for gaming I didn't catch that at first. Anyway, I found a solution for it on reddit at the following link: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/11lhg40/comment/l2azm6n/ In short you need to go in to the settings and Disable "Disable GPU Blocklist" and enable "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views". I have no idea why it works and it doesn't seem to work for everyone, but I thought I'd update here if anyone else has similar issues and might be helped by it....

I have an RTX 3070 and I experienced the same issues that you are having I read about it and it may be that the Nvidia drivers which are included in Bazzite don't have nvidia-patch So Sunshine has to use the X11 screen recording method instead of NvFBC I tried to get some help from the Devs but noone answered, it's not really their problem but an Nvidia one So we might have to assume that streaming with Nvidia won't be nice Because 555 benefits are mainly for XWayland... And Sunshine in Wayland at least for me worked as badly as X11 So new drivers won't benefit at all

Thanks for your reply. That’s unfortunate since I do game regularly on the tv through steam link. I was hoping to switch fully to Bazzite but guess I’ll keep windows a bit longer just for streaming 🙂 Hopefully this will be fixed in the future.

I also have an RTX 3070 and was having issues streaming with Sunshine on Bazzite, but no issues with Windows on the same machine. Sunshine/Bazzite would struggle to maintain the stream at 60 fps, and I noticed it was using X11 screen recording. I tried rpm-ostree layering a more recent version of Sunshine, but it was not much better. I then uninstalled Sunshine via ujust, and instead installed the latest version via an Arch Distrobox. Running Sunshine via the Arch Distrobox now reports "Screencasting with NvFBC" and streaming performance is much better. I am still dealing with a few dropped frames every so often, but average stream statistics are close to 60.00 fps. Another thing to consider is I haven't found a clean way to autostart Sunshine when it's installed via Distrobox. Currently I just have to manually run sunshine in a terminal. I'm also interested to see how Wayland performs with Sunshine/Moonlight once 555 is out, but for now I'm running X11 on both host and client Bazzite machines.

are you running sunshine in a rootful distrobox container?

I don't believe so, I used the Bazzite arch image in BoxBuddy. But I'm currently getting this miniupnpc error after an arch update: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine/issues/2775 So waiting for that fix to be released to continue testing Edit: sunshine X11 NvFBC in arch Distrobox is working again as of pre-release v2024.702.125729
