**COMPLEX ISSUE** (?) - Players cannot join 1.20.4 server, met with "not enough bytes in buffer" err
Just plugged in my rig for the first time in a (1.20.4) while. The only change that has occurred is that there is now a PCIE wifi card supplying network instead of an ethernet cable. When the server starts, no sort of error codes appear in the console other than the "update me please!!" from my plugins. The port and same IP test as OPEN on any port checker website. Again... literally nothing has changed. I even tried not using a custom install of 1.20.4, to no avail. This is all very tortuous to understand, at least to me. Any help is much appreciated. THank you

to clarify - the error recieved upon trying to join reads "not enoguh bytes in buffer, expected 11 got 6"
Only thing I can think of is to double check the server installation version matches your player's client-version
update ... now the error is "failed to decode packet, clientbound/minecraft:login_disconnect"
likely bad wifi card, missing drivers or something like that
if that's really the only thing that's changed, you can pretty much narrow it down. self hosting a server that's on wifi is... kinda crazy
downloaded both intel and asus drivers for it. if curious its an asus ax1800
yea its a temporary solution
why can't you continue using ethernet?
this issue likely has nothing to do with your server config, sounds completely networking related, unless there's something in your logs that says otherwise
im on a home network .. nothing special nor oriented towards 24/7 server-open-ness ... im not exactly 100% sure but i think I burned out an ethernet port
that would read a different error, the default is outdated client or outdated server
one day the ethernet just stopped working. Not the port on the mobo, not sure if it was the cable tbh, but the port on my modem that it was plugged into doesn't give connection anymore
modem could be past its use
wait actually im pretty sure it was the cable ... Im gonna need to trouble shoot
could also be why you're having this issue
I mean, no such "networking" ethernet cables exist no?
they're all just copper wiring ?
yeah true
Usually correct yeah, but I had seen it occur a few times with versions like 1.20.2, and 1.19. Doesn't seem to be the issue here though
1.20.x has this issue infamously almost, so many github / reddit posts about the very issue in different variations
i digress, i will have to look into re-attaining ethernet
well i think this is an issue with your home network
yes
obv youre not spectrum support, but what do you reccomend as a modem more fit to this sort of load?
it really depends what you're willing to spend tbh
i've had bad luck with buying fancy gaming routers and the like
i see
maybe someone here could make a good recommendation, but for now i'd try
- restart your modem and server
- temporarily disable your firewall to see if that's the issue
- make sure your client and server versions match
- have someone else join the server and see if they get the same issue
im looking for a very short term solution .. do you think this is one of those rare situations that i need to put the ip of the wifi card in the "serverip=" section of server config?
thank you for your suggestions
you should be able to see you IP in settings -> network & internet -> advanced -> hardware and connection properties
it did NOT work btw
it will detect your configuration
btw
oh
i have a Killer E3100G 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Controller
and it has been very stable
i just did a ipconfig in cmd, is that any different?
shouldn't be, they're both reading the same thing
but yeah i'm prettyyy sure something is either bad with your modem (past its use) or your wifi card doesn't really work or is configured incorrectly
i have a feeling its the wifi card
yeah
Are you able to run a Minecraft client on the same machine that runs the server? Do you get errors logging in if you type in localhost?
