Any way to make these bars shorter/less wide?

Right click, enter edit mode. You should be able to change all the settings there
Doesn't appear to be anything in those settings
you are right clicking on the bar, right?
oh you mean the buttons on the bar?
there are other bars, like the icon only bar, but I don't think you can make the actual buttons shorter on the one with names.
