I would have thought that that would be possible. No doubt they did it using CSS.
The only thing that I can't work out is what criteria it uses to scale down the avatar siblings as it seems a bit random (I'm sure it isn't) but the animated gif is too fast to work it out. I also can't find the original version.
I did something similar some time ago which might give you some ideas.
My version was responsive so that it re-calculated the joining lines depending on the screen size.
