pants look too wide at the top. looking for advice on what to tailor and sizing
Recently bought some pants that I otherwise like from JCrew. But they look too wide at the top, which makes the overall figure look strange imo (see pics). Especially if I have anything in my pockets. I'm looking for suggestions on what exactly is wrong with the sizing here and what should I be asking a talior to actually do with these. Thanks!

i would argue they're too slim across the board
if you're able to switch these out for the next size up that will likely solve the pocket flare and pulling at the top
Do you mean size up on the waist or length? They already feel kinda loose on the waist so I'm wondering if that would make it worse
but i would also consider a less slim cut of pant as well (classic fit is my preferred choice); i personally don't like a lot of breaks or bunching at the hem and a less tapered cut will give the same overall effect but with a little more balance
size up on the waist or find a higher rise. i've had this happen in the past with 484s - i have a smaller waist and larger quads/glues so the low rise caused the pockets and belt loops to flare at my hips
mid rise/high rise pants both land at or slightly above the natural waist for me, so the pants hang from the hips without being stretched out in response
Ah that's interesting. I think that's my problem as well 😬. Do you have any recs for chino brands I can look into that are higher rise?
And one more q - do you think wearing these higher with a belt could help or is that not really a good idea?
It's likely to make it worse. You need something with a bit more room between the crotch and the waistband, pulling things tighter doesn't create that.
It's because there's too much of a taper homie
always had the same problem, i like bootcut/flared fit pants, it gives volume to the lower leg while fits nicely or just regularly around the thigh and waist bit
its very balanced and somehow makes us look taller
my literal shopping goals for pants are bootcut loose, bootcut normal and then regular fit pants
bootcut loose gives that trendy baggy pants look without constantly needing to fluff up the pants to make em loon wide for pics
missed this - if you're going brick & mortar, j.crew's classic fit (or giant fit if you feel adventurous) is a moderately high rise and a straight leg. try it on in person if possible, because j.crew waist measurements are often not TTS
if you're willing to go secondhand, check ebay for polo ralph lauren pants, specifically the andrews (which are pleated) or philips (which are not). they are a higher rise than the j.crew classics (maybe 12" vs 11") but they also drop nicely from the hip to hem.
casatlantic is another very good brand if you have the money to spend on it
