proportions

Hello hello, back here again after 6-7 months. Took a lot of the advice I got last time, but I’m still learning. Everything was good until I started using my back camera to check how outfits look (since mirrors reverse the image) and I realize that proportionally, everything’s still off. I’ll post some examples below.

I mean I get some of this is just the way things are but I’m sure there’s some way to dress that would minimize the severity of whatever’s going on
menace
menace2mo ago
but what is yer goal for style in terms of proportions tho
Erik
Erik2mo ago
lemme send some pics of the styles I go for

Turtlenecks, sweaters, button downs (short or long), etc
menace
menace2mo ago
idk the proper name but basically autumn core
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Yeah essentially
menace
menace2mo ago
wait so whats unsatisfactory of this in terms of proportions ?
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I’ve just got no clue because from what I’ve seen in bedroom/bathroom mirrors everything looked fine But then I flip camera and it just looks disproportional Idk I just feel like the arms drag too low below the waist when I look at it from back camera
Erik
Erik2mo ago
For example this just looks off

try a picture standing like front facing w the body bc all we see from these are proportions for the vertical but not accounting for the horizontal so far all the advice i can come up is taller shoes and lowering the waist of the pants it ll give height and balance the arms

I’m also definitely hitting the gym this summer and I think(?) putting muscle onto the arms (I’m 16 and they’re thin as fuck) would help balance some stuff out And I’m sure itd help with posture too Yeah but the shirt isn’t tucked so idk if lowering the waist of the pants would do much
menace
menace2mo ago
owh yer 16 you just mightve not grown into yer limbs yet my arm span was also longer than my height for a bit growing up
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Nah doctors said I’m like basically done growing And my arm span is shorter than my height it’s just that my torso is hella small
menace
menace2mo ago
bc family height? or actual bone test thing where they look at it w an xray or something
Erik
Erik2mo ago
The latter and family height too
artvandelayimporting
this looks good
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Both parents were 5’5 so I was NOT blessed with bei chi t Height*
menace
menace2mo ago
yea it aint that bad at all
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I feel like it looks better with front camera for whatever reason That and mirror
menace
menace2mo ago
so i still stand w the wear shoes w more of heel
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I always look in the bathroom mirror before class and it always looks perfect But then I pulled out the back camera and it was entirely different
william
william2mo ago
Height doesn’t matter if proportionately the clothes fit
artvandelayimporting
the best way to evaluate is a combination of the mirror and shooting the outfit head on like you just did
Erik
Erik2mo ago
arm length is the big issue Which is a more accurate indicator of how the outfits actually look
menace
menace2mo ago
also from someone skinny(still skinny bth) do shoulders for width bc people think i m a lot more fit than i am bc of my shoulder bones(thank you mom)
Erik
Erik2mo ago
back camera or bathroom mirror
artvandelayimporting
camera imo but if you don't want to take a picture of the outfit everyday then the mirror is perfectly fine too
menace
menace2mo ago
agreed bc mirrors were looking from are at our eyeline of height so its semi distorted unless the mirrors at an angle. so pics w the camera lower is best to see the proportion
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Camera lower as in how low Ahhh I was doing closer to head
menace
menace2mo ago
yeah like that bascially around yer thigh to waist further down will make you look longer and taller
Erik
Erik2mo ago
How does lighting play into this
menace
menace2mo ago
while up wil make you look stumpier and shorter
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Bulb died yesterday so the lighting has not been ideal
No description
artvandelayimporting
yeah overhead lighting is never great hahaha
menace
menace2mo ago
im not the person for that, for pics i prioritise face, no unattractive shadows and i m good
artvandelayimporting
ideally you'd have a light source coming from in front of you
william
william2mo ago
The lighting be towards you and not from the back or overhead
artvandelayimporting
if you've got a window you can stand in front of that works
william
william2mo ago
If you have it lit from the back, you can’t see any details. If you are lit from overhead, you’re going to cast shadows and lose details again
Erik
Erik2mo ago
How’s a setup like this

Erik
Erik2mo ago
Haven’t taken a picture here but would this be any good
menace
menace2mo ago
on that note i bought a big foldable reflector incase of backlight to take pics of friends or have em take pics of me to be specific its double sided, one sides plain white and the other is like aluminium foil reflective

white gives a nice smoother glow
Erik
Erik2mo ago
So lower is more accurate in general? What would be like The perfect height for peak accuracy? The thigh region?
menace
menace2mo ago
for me specifically i do around waist like camera at the belly button level well more or less
william
william2mo ago
I’m 5 5 so I aim at like knee lmao
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Alright yeah I’m seeing some differences for sure Minor but definitely better
Erik
Erik2mo ago
This is a little above the belly button
No description
Erik
Erik2mo ago
This is closer to the knee/thigh
No description
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Very minor but I can see it a bit
artvandelayimporting
I think your tshirt is also a size too small
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Yeah these are just pjs so I don’t care all too much right now
menace
menace2mo ago
thats a different conundrum shirt sizes
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Oh I know I just wear what I can’t wear outside to bed Hence why half my pjs are shirts I wore when I was younger
menace
menace2mo ago
do we go by shoulders or do we go by fit like absolutely confuses me to this day owh everyone does that
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Yeah I just cba to change into an outfit at 3am
menace
menace2mo ago
shirt be lost of all of its cotton and all its left is a sheer polyester shirt lol
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Real
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Regarding sleeves though how long should sleeves ideally be in order to not accentuate the arm length
No description
Erik
Erik2mo ago
As you can see they come down to around mid thigh
artvandelayimporting
I mean in this instance the main issue is that the shirt is also too short at the waist I like mine landing mid bicep though
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Yeah that’s typically what I aim for with short sleeves what about long sleeves
menace
menace2mo ago
im a 3/4 to 90% of the upper arm kind of person bc yk wide shoulders but skinny skinny arms
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I have this one suit jacket but it looks hella off because the sleeves are a bit too short
menace
menace2mo ago
ooowh long sleeves i like it to be on longer size the rule is if i raise my arm forwards it should only be slight shorter from my wrist or still cover my wrists optimally
Erik
Erik2mo ago
If the sleeves consistently fall below my wrist when I’m taking a photo would you say they’re too short
No description
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I doubt it’s a skinny issue since other shirts I have don’t do it and they’re lighter
menace
menace2mo ago
but this is also a vibe tho
william
william2mo ago
I think there are aspects that you might be overthinking
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Oh for sure
menace
menace2mo ago
it gives opportunity to accessorise w a bracelet
Erik
Erik2mo ago
yeah I always wear a watch on my left
menace
menace2mo ago
noice
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Plus I’m 90% sure that if I put muscle on it’d help balance everything out a lot Don’t know for sure if it would help but it’s worth a try
menace
menace2mo ago
owh problem tho w working out in my workout era i went from a L to an XL in shirt size and i didnt really own alot stuff outside my size
Erik
Erik2mo ago
The thing is if I get any shirts that are medium they’d run way too low
menace
menace2mo ago
hemming baby whether it be hemming it properly or just cropping it by just raw cutting the shirt shorter
Erik
Erik2mo ago
My mom does a fuck ton of sewing machine work, do you think we could do any of it at home or would we for sure need to hit the tailor?
menace
menace2mo ago
owh totally, except if its like a suit coat blazer thing you can hem so much stuff even like hoodies w a whole thick stretchy edge thing apparently you can just sew it back own lol
Erik
Erik2mo ago
So the thing is my arms are longer so sometimes I have to order a size up But then that ends up baggy and king Long* Can they tighten the fit and cut the waist Waist I’m sure they can but can they tighten it
artvandelayimporting
what kind of shirts are we talking about
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I’ve had a few issues with button down dress shirts in the past A few of my turtlenecks too
artvandelayimporting
sweaters are not worth having altered
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Why not?
artvandelayimporting
anything knit is just super difficult (expensive)
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Fair
menace
menace2mo ago
yea totally i got a pink polyster blazer thing from shein for the barbie movie, it wasnt giving from how the waist was like not well fitted, guy at a store took off 5 inches from for just 5 bucks yea only if you have a really good tailor you can trust
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Are sleeve extensions a thing or not? Doubt it since they’d have to match the materials and colors and all but I’m not sure
artvandelayimporting
not really
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Yeah I assumed so I’ll definitely look into tailoring
menace
menace2mo ago
i saw a thing on tiktok the other day its possible apparently
menace
menace2mo ago
ik its straight up black magic
artvandelayimporting
lots of things are possible fewer things are worthwhile
menace
menace2mo ago
howd they make something longer or wider from the same fabric like htf fashion wizardry
Erik
Erik2mo ago
I have a button down exactly like this and it looks so good but then it ends at like my lower thigh
No description
Erik
Erik2mo ago
How would like the endings/areas they shorten be after tailoring Would it look normal
menace
menace2mo ago
proportionally yea if it usually ends at yer lower thigh
Erik
Erik2mo ago
No like It’s REALLY low
artvandelayimporting
it can be hemmed
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Probably lower than thigh I didn’t really look but it was lowwwww
artvandelayimporting
pretty easily
Erik
Erik2mo ago
Alright I’ll look into that There’s a few good places nearby so that shouldn’t be a problem
artvandelayimporting
but if it's that long the chances are that it was meant to be worn tucked in
Erik
Erik2mo ago
That’s a whole other can of worms
bishopcorrigan
bishopcorrigan2mo ago
I honestly don’t think you need to go crazy tailoring stuff, I suspect that mostly what you’re worried about is in your own head rather than stuff that’s actually wrong about the fit, or can be solved in other ways besides spending a bunch of money altering clothes you probably won’t wear in a year

Here’s my more expansive but single page fit pic guide as the in between the sticker and Charlie’s blogpost

I’ll try that out and see how it all looks Definitely noticed a difference due to angles and lighting
