Is it worth it to bust your ass of for two years to land a MANGA job?

i mean for those who've already been through it the usual answer is "yes". not sure where you're at to determine how much effort 'bust your ass" is
leetcode itself is pretty deterministic with concepts and structures already defined and outlined for you -- you just need to practice

appreciate your response
I'm basically a neophyte who just knows the basics of important concepts like DSA
I don't think I could work very hard for that long without seeing some kind of ROI. I'm not sure how long it would take to get a decent position at a place like Capital One or something?

CapitalOne isn't really big tech. Better to target jobs with low HPW with fewer to no LC requirements. Though you should have some baseline DSA knowledge.

FAANG is well worth it because it opens so many interviews for you where you would have been weeded out pre-interview. But I don't think they're OE friendly.

basically saying it's not worth it sometimes cause even faang can rescind an offer even after extending an offer

Two different philosophies. Fastest money is low HPW + stacking. MANGA provides easier future J's by giving companies the peace of mind that you can pass a MANGA hiring process + if you can hack it there for a couple years you've passed the "white collar worker" test.
The companies are so big that it really depends what org you are in and your job role as to whether it’s OE friendly or not.
I got lots of friends at the various faang companies and some of them say it’s OE friendly, like Google, Meta, Microsoft, etc. I guess the only company that everyone agrees is not OE friendly is AMZN/AWS. Also, if you’re trying to climb the ladder within faang companies then you’re obviously going to have to work a lot harder and won’t have time to OE.
To answer the OP though, it’s definitely worth it to bust your ass for 2 years to land a manga job. 100%

Main reason they aren't OE friendly is that they don't do remore anymore
Wdym? Of course they still do remote. That just depends on the company. Furthermore, it depends on your org within the company and your specific role.

i think the majority of attainable roles aren't remote. i.e E4/L4 level and below
obviously if you're really good, leetcode well, and are at more than senior level, remote is definitely attainable
though i saw passed around on teamblind that for meta in particular, for E5 you'd need to be hybrid for X months
Now that I think about it, most of my friends are L5/L6 but I know some L4s too.

yeah at that level, remote's probably the perk 🤣
sensitive-blue•6mo ago
Agree. Pendulum is shifting back. So 5 days, then remote, now hybrid (which is likely here to stay). Management is holding firm and won't give up handing out remote days as carrots.
Meta solution architects are all remote as far as I know.
xenial-black•6mo ago
i believe this
sensitive-blue•6mo ago
I could see that. Some roles can be so valuable OR so invaluable that the carrot of remote is needed.

yeah, the unfortuante thing about talking to "the average joe" and talking to the "exceptional candidate" though is the majority of folks are average and won't be at levels where they can push for remote , well unless you're netflix/nvidia
apple, amazon, meta, and google are out of the question for L4s for remote

Prior to Covid. 5 days in office roles at my J's were pretty lax on showing up to the office. However, you had to have a reason like kids, dr. appt, offsite meeting, etc. to justify working remote that day. I think this is the structure that companies are *hoping to get back.
For SWEs

I was talking to some recruiters from faang about L5 roles recently, and they said even with L5/L6 roles, remote roles are very rare.
I spoke to some friends at these companies who talked to me about OE, and they said you absolutely cannot do OE as L6.
From what I've noticed, it's that the faang companies don't advertise remote roles but everything changes once you get your foot in the door.
For example, at my faang company, we advertise all our roles on our careers page for a specific location During the interviews, they will tell you that it requires you to come into the office. However, once you actually join the company, it's a fully remote job. Even if it's not a fully remote job, you can switch roles internally to something fully remote much easier than applying from external.
L6 typically leads a lot of meetings and has to do a lot of these side internal projects for the company that would eat up your time and make it harder to OE. However, once again, it's completely dependent on what your role and org is within the company.
At my faang company, I talked with some L6s in one org that just tell me they chill and have low HPW and don't have to lead a lot of meetings but then there are other L6s in another org in the company that work their butts off to maintain that level.

That makes it pretty hard to sus out the remote culture until you get there.

Yeah, and you can't do that without relocating to some shithole like the bay area to get established first, and then you can go remote.
