I need help man…
Ok so I think my taste in clothes is pretty good, my knowledge in clothes however is extremely small due to my non materialistic mindset. Overtime the clothes I’ve had have gotten old and over worn, to the point where even the people close to me say I need new clothes. I’m smaller but have a well proportionate and gym body so wearing plain tees/sweats was my go to for a while.
I’m not the type to wanna go for designer clothes or overpriced products, but I have no idea where to start. Don’t know where to look, what stores to drive to, how to improve my fashion sense, how to always be able to get new clothes on a tight budget, etc. I’m not sure if this is the best section to ask this question, but this is the place I see the best stuff about clothes being posted.
I humbly request the fashion head’s assistance, thank you.

you improve your fashion sense a lot by just, well, learning. a bulk of what makes or breaks a fit is purely vibes based
and the only way to find what you like outside of your realm of tried and true is to start putting things on
the only way to “win” is by learning, the only way to begin is by beginning and the only way to learn is by doing
i mean that last part by the way. you can read all the articles and theory you want, but you won’t ever fully understand what you’re doing until you start actually doing it
crazy how one of the best mantras ever for learning anything new comes from an indie improv gameshow
BUT ANYWAYS, in a more concrete sense, poking around threads in here, especially for questions people ask, will help you get a headstart
there’s also a substack, i don’t know how much of it is free to access, but everything i’ve read has been pretty solid thus far
#fashion-guides
it takes a lot to be able to say 'i want to improve but don't know how', especially with one's clothing and personal style, where caring can be perceived as materialistic or frivolous; i think this is a great community for exploring what exactly you want to get out of your clothing (whether it's just to find new clothes to work in or to figure out your persona aesthetic)
beyond what lyon said and beyond reading the first few guides that egg linked in #fashion-guides i would take a look at #waywt and #inspiration and other places (#menswear on social media for example) to see what people are wearing. if you like something, make a note of it, ask questions, and build up what you like in clothing as well as what you know
the substack is also a viable resource, and i think you might find value in this recent article https://malefashionadvice.substack.com/p/on-the-development-of-personal-style
On the development of personal style

If you want to be frugal and less materialistic, definitely consider shopping second hand. Thrift stores and eBay.
I mean don’t get me wrong I’d wear and like the more expensive clothes
But am open to the whole spectrum
Also thank you all for all the help so far, can tell y’all really tryna help a guy out :RSWorryPray:
Sure, and eBay is a way to buy expensive clothes cheaply, if you are patient.
My favorite guide, by the way, is the basic bastard. It lays out all the basics of a decent wardrobe.
But it takes time and effort. Big things for me were: 1) paying attention to what people were wearing, here and offline. 2) spending time shopping (not necessarily buying) to know what my options are. 3) starting to buy clothes, put together outfits, and post pictures
Gotchu
Yea I gotta start exploring
And trying
What about reps where’s the best place to get those?
Reps?
Basically it’s where you buy duplicates of more expensive clothes/shoes
They come straight from the factory so everything is the same
But it’s not at resale price(usually always cheaper by a lot)
This is not the most rep-friendly place
Most actual conversation around reps here comes around trying to identify and not accidentally buy them.
buying reps is bait bc it's intentionally mimicking items that could be found cheaper anyways from other brands who rip them off in spirit but not literally
Reps are the epitome of materialism
Because if you weren't materialistic you wouldn't be trying to copy exactly another more well known (and often expensive) brand
in terms of how to buy better clothes on a tight budget.. shop secondhand.. many resources in #fashion-guides on how to get started
can't 'not have a materialistic mindset' and spend money you don't have on clothing of lower quality than its emulating to try to project socioeconomic status
they do not come from the same factory, it is not the same people and materials, there are better options for similar clothes and if you do the work to find them sometimes you'll find a brand that's doing something at a good price point and get cred for knowing something cool and underground
Orslow is a great place to get reps
with a little persistence you can probably find the actual item or a worthwhile substitute for a decent price
*provided you're willing to spend the time and/or effort in lieu of spending money
Ahhhh ok, yea I never got any just saw that being the most popular fashion Reddit on discord
That’s very true
I don’t see it as that, I was seeing it as “I like this design, but it’s $400 lemme see if I can find it cheaper” don’t really care about the brand behind the product
Ok so I’ll read that to get me started
Ah so those promoting reps falsely advertise to make more money?
Yea that’s probably what I’ll have to do
Yup. The whole “it’s made in the same factory as gucci” is a way for them to sell their lower quality stuff for higher.
Factories have multiple levels of production. When companies source work from them, they pay on a scale.
Some will have people hand-finishing details while also have the capability to do everything on the loom. The cost of these would be wildly different, as would the end result.
Leather tanneries for example, will have a wide range of leather qualities which they sell for different purposes. A show made from their top product will be very different from the leather they produce for cheap industrial purposes. But you could do that and claim it’s the “same leather tannery”.
gotchu gotchu, thanks for the enlightening. Now I know before I dipped my feet into the repping community
so how would I find similar designed products? would I just ask around or mostly its all my own research
I would just find outfits you like in general rather than items
Cuz outfits give items context
Could be used in different styles and whatnot
So when you share outfits you like it becomes apparent what you're into
that's very true, ok then thanks 🙂
